Perceived Threat of Infertility and Women ’s Intention to Anticipate Childbearing: The Mediating Role of Personally Perceived Barriers and Facilitators
In conclusion, women who perceive themselves at risk of being infertile will consider, to a higher degree, infertility as a strong barrier to achieve their reproductive life plan or will report higher willingness to use fertility treatments, which in turn would increase intentions to anticipate childbearing. Since evidence showed lack of fertility awareness, intervention initiatives should target these mediators. (Source: Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings)

Reducing the Impacts of Mental Health Stigma Through Integrated Primary Care: An Examination of the Evidence
AbstractThe reduction of mental health stigma (MHS) was an expected benefit of integrating behavioral health in primary care (IPC). However, unlike other barriers discussed in agency reports on IPC, discussions of MHS lack research support. To fill this gap, the authors conducted a literature review identifying seven studies. Given the dearth of research, we also examine general IPC research on probable indicators of MHS reduction in IPC, as well as, facets of IPC potentially influencing MHS related factors negatively associated with help-seeking. Using the data from these three types of research, the evidence suggests the...

Assessing Parental Anxiety in Pediatric Food Allergy: Development of the Worry About Food Allergy Questionnaire
This study developed and preliminarily validated the 13-item Worry About Food Allergy (WAFA) questionnaire, a measure of FA-specific parental anxiety, in an online sample of 265 parents aged 22–66 (M = 40.25) of children with FAs. The WAFA showed good internal reliability (Cronbach’sα = .89) and moderate convergent validity with other anxiety measures, indicating support for a reliable measure of a discrete, specific construct. Exploratory factor analysis indicated a single factor structure. Criterion validity was established through significant, small, positive correlations with relevant allergy variables. A ...

Strategies for Managing Chronic Pain, Chronic PTSD, and Comorbidities: Reflections on a Case Study Documented over Ten Years
This article briefly reviews four models for exploring the interrelationships of chronic pain and chronic PTSD. The article presents a longitudinal case study, documented over 10 years, of a patient with chronic back pain, and delayed-onset chronic PTSD related to sexual trauma experienced as a young adult. Data from the case study are examined for evidence in support of the chronic pain/chronic PTSD models. There is evidence to support all four models, with considerable evidence supporting the Mutual Maintenance Model (Sharp& Harvey, in Clinical Psychology Review 21(6): 857 –77, 2001). Data show significant recovery...

Accuracy of Body Size Estimation in Youth with Cystic Fibrosis and Association with Health-Related Quality of Life
AbstractAccuracy of body size estimation may impact motivation to adhere to treatment recommendations and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in youth with cystic fibrosis (CF), but this has not yet been investigated. Thus, the goal of the current study was to examine accuracy of body size estimation in youth with CF, and associations with HRQOL, lung functioning, and dietary intake. Fifty-four youth diagnosed with CF (M = 13.61 years) completed theFigure Rating Scale, theCystic Fibrosis Questionnaire–Revised, and a 24-h diet recall interview. Cohen ’s Weighted Kappa Coefficient evaluated agreement between body...

Integrating Behavioral Healthcare and Primary Care, Appropriate Balance on What Model is Driving Care, and, the Whole Spectrum of Individuals are Coming Through the Door …
AbstractWith the integration of behavioral health services into primary care and other medical specialties, the community of providers and the public must address a number of questions, including: What models of care are there for these services? What kinds of providers supply these services? Are these providers trained behavioral health providers or extenders in some form? And, as these systems of care are constructed, who makes use of them? The purpose of this study is to address these questions as well as to consider some of the challenges of attending to the spectrum of needs that will arise as integrated healthcare se...

She Screened Positive for Depression at the First Prenatal Visit, What Really Happens Next?
AbstractThe aim of this mixed-methods study was to evaluate how providers in a busy urban practice with universal depression screening and co-located behavioral health services responded to positive screens and to explore patient expectations and attitudes towards positive screens. Semi-structured interviews of 20 pregnant women were conducted within 10  days of a positive depression screen or endorsement of suicidal ideation on the Edinburgh Perinatal Depression Scale and health record documentation was reviewed. Qualitative data were entered into a meta-matrix and cross-case analysis was used to reduce the data and dete...

Pediatric Consultation-Liaison: Patient Characteristics and Considerations for Training in Evidence-Based Practices
AbstractConsultation-liaison services are an integral part of many pediatric hospital settings, yet characteristics of this patient population have not been extensively documented. The current study is a retrospective one-year chart review of the consultation-liaison service at a large pediatric hospital in the Southwestern United States. The purpose of this study is twofold: (1) to characterize this hospital ’s CL population and (2) to use these characteristics to identify preliminary evidence-based practices that should be considered for CL provider training. Identifying evidence-based practice elements that align with...

Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder in Children and Adolescents within Medical Settings
AbstractPediatric functional neurological symptom disorder (FNSD or conversion disorder) is an often misunderstood but treatable condition that frequently presents in medical settings with unexplained symptoms. Although research regarding treatment of pediatric FNSD is increasing, it is still in its infancy and studies in pediatrics do not provide clear guidelines about which patients are most likely to benefit from various treatments. The role of pediatric psychologists may include consultation, assessment, treatment, program development, and providing education to patients, families, and healthcare colleagues in various ...

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Primary Care: A Study of General Practices in England
AbstractPosttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) may be a common issue in primary care in the UK, but there have been no studies of all-cause PTSD in general samples of attenders in this country. The current paper thus explores the extent and distribution of probable PTSD among patients attending general practices in England. Cross-sectional survey data from adult patients (n = 1058) attending 11 general practices in southwest England were analysed. Patients were recruited from waiting rooms and completed anonymous questionnaires, including measures of depression, anxiety and risky alcohol use. Current probable PTSD was me...
