A Qualitative Exploration of Sleep Habits and Intervention Needs Among Youth with Cystic Fibrosis
AbstractEvidence suggests that individuals with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) experience difficulties with sleep architecture and hygiene, although research is limited. There are currently no behavioral sleep interventions for youth with CF. The current study used qualitative methods to understand sleep needs and concerns among youth with CF, as well as to obtain feedback about potentially useful behavioral sleep intervention strategies. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with youth with CF between the ages of 11 –17 and their parents. Themes were extracted from the data and will be used to inform the development of a brie...

Criterion and Incremental Validity of the MMPI-3 Eating Concerns Scale in a University Sample
AbstractThe purpose of the current study was to evaluate the validity of scores on the Eating Concerns (EAT) scale on the recently released Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3), which aims to assess for problematic eating behaviours. It was hypothesised that the EAT scale scores would be correlated with binge eating, purging, restrictive eating, weight and body shape concerns. Participants were 396 university students, who completed a series of well-validated eating disorder measures. The EAT scale scores evidenced moderate to large correlations with many symptom dimensions of EDs, including binge eating,...

Individuals ’ Intention to Engage in Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation Programs: Prediction Based on an Enhanced Model
AbstractMotivation is an important factor in encouraging individuals to attend rehabilitation and underpins many approaches to engagement. The aims of this study were to develop an accurate model able to predict individual intention to engage in outpatient cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs based on the first stage of the Model of Therapeutic Engagement integrated into a socio-environmental context. The cross-sectional study in the cardiology ward of an Australian hospital included a total of 217 individuals referred to outpatient CR. Through an ordinal logistic regression, the effect of random forest (RF)-selected profi...

Addressing Perinatal Mental Health Risk within a Fetal Care Center
AbstractDiagnosis of a fetal anomaly in pregnancy increases the risk for perinatal mental health difficulties, including anxiety, depression, and traumatic stress among expectant parents. Common emotional challenges include uncertainty about the diagnosis/prognosis, anticipated neonatal course, fears of fetal or neonatal demise, loss of a typical, uncomplicated pregnancy and postpartum course, and disruption of family roles due to medical care-related activities and restrictions. Psychologists in multidisciplinary fetal care centers are uniquely positioned to assess mental health risks and address the needs of expectant pa...

The Impact of Anxiety on Behavioral Sleep Difficulties and Treatment in Young Children: A Review of the Literature
AbstractSleep difficulties are a common pediatric complaint, and the majority of these sleep difficulties are behavioral in nature (e.g., difficulties initiating or maintaining sleep). Although research supports behavioral interventions to improve sleep in young children with behavioral sleep difficulties, anxiety and child distress are common in this age range and these factors can impact treatment outcomes directly (e.g., increased distress and resistance at bedtime) and indirectly (e.g., poor parental compliance with behavioral strategies). Anxiety is an important aspect of treatment in adolescents and adults with behav...

Interdisciplinarity and Integration: An Introduction to the Special Issue on Psychopathology in Medical Settings
AbstractAs the world views, incredulously, the calamitous consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, the inseparable connections between body and mind become more and more apparent, even for the heretics (i.e., biological determinists). Such realizations also bolster the understanding of the close link between medical conditions and psychopathology. Launched prior to the COVID-19 epidemic, this special issue sets out to illuminate the prevalence, course, etiology, and responses to a myriad of psychopathological conditions in medical conditions. The 13 articles in this special issue address a variety of medical conditions (chro...

Validity of the Somatic Complaints Scales of the MMPI-2-RF in an Outpatient Chronic Pain Clinic
AbstractChronic pain has become a significant medical issue. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) is a broadband psychological test that has been validated for use across various medical settings and can aid in the assessment and treatment planning of chronic pain. In the current investigation, it was hypothesized that the somatic complaints scales of the MMPI-2-RF would demonstrate good convergent validity from a structured psychodiagnostic interview and other measures of pain and somatization, and lack gender bias. Patients (n = 200) who produced valid MMPI-2-RFs in an outpa...

Ethical Issues in Providing End-of-Life Cancer Care for Transitional-Aged Youth
This article reviews significant clinical, ethical, and legal considerations relevant to psychologists working in oncology. Transitional-aged youth (TAY, ages 16 –24) with cancer face a number of challenges when navigating treatment options at the EOL. Changes in treatment roadmaps, lapses in effective provider–patient communication, disagreements with parents, and developmental and disease-based changes in capacity all become salient in palliative care. Psychologists should be aware that both physician and patient factors influence the types of treatments proposed as well as the extent of EOL discussions. Psychologist...

Hormonal and Subjectively Perceived Stress of the Emergency Physicians of the Airborne Rescue Service
AbstractDue to their work activities, emergency physicians are regularly exposed to exceptional mental and physical situations. In order to prevent stress-related illnesses, the triggers of hormonal and subjectively perceived stress must be understood better. On a sample of emergency physicians from two air rescue services (N = 80), the cortisol awakening response (CAR) was determined on flight rescue days, clinic days, and days off. Pearson correlations showed significant connections between the CAR on flight rescue days and individual scales of the Trier Inventory for Chronic Stress (TICS) and the Perceived Stress Sc...
