New-Onset Solitary Black Lesion on the Heel
The new onset of a darkly pigmented lesion of the heel is a common reason for patients to present to their dermatology clinic. Herein, we describe a photo quiz of a case of a darkly pigmented lesion that appeared on the heel of a middle-aged adult. The answer choices include the differentials for a new-onset darkly pigmented lesion on the heel, and the correct answer can only be elucidated given the patient history, appearance of the lesion, and findings upon dermoscopy and paring of the lesion. Accurate diagnosis and proper management are important to reduce significant morbidity and costs associated with unnecessary inva...

Instructional Dermatology Surface Models: A New Paradigm in Nursing Dermatology Education
The need for improving dermatology education is supported by the prevalence of skin cancer and by the high rates of skin disease. Instructional dermatology surface models were created by nurses in response to the rising incidence of skin cancer, the predominance of skin disease, and inadequate dermatology education. The aims of this nonexperimental descriptive research included (a) to establish the face validity and content validity of the models, (b) to assess the educational applicability for nursing and nondermatology students and clinicians, and (c) to further develop the models. A convenience sample of four physicians...

Improving Nursing Students' Knowledge and Assessment Skills Regarding Skin Cancer Using Online Teaching Resources
This study was designed to test an educational intervention intended to teach nursing students about skin cancer so they can reach competence and be certified by faculty to educate their patients. Similarly, students are educated and certified in other areas, namely, asthma and naloxone administration. Using a quasi-experimental design, we assigned nursing students (n = 146) to either an intervention group, which received an online educational treatment...

Viral Exanthems in Pediatrics From Vaccine Preventable Diseases
Vaccine preventable eruptions deserve special attention in pediatrics, because early recognition speeds testing, contact tracing, treatment, reporting, and prevention. Focusing on cutaneous manifestations of vaccine preventable diseases in pediatrics, the following diseases are discussed: measles, rubella, varicella, smallpox, and meningococcemia. Key factors identified to help differentiate such diseases from others include location, distribution, and cou...
