Skin Cancer Knowledge and Prevention Practices Among Young Adult Athletes
This article examines current literature and studies that have researched young adult athletes on their knowledge of being at an increased skin cancer risk as well as their attitudes and sun protective behaviors in regard to skin cancer and prevention. The purpose is to evaluate as a whole whether frequent sun exposure influences young adult athletes’ use of preventative measures such as sunscreen or protective clothing. Results found that most athletes were knowledgeable of sunscreen use being a preventative measure for sun protection and skin cancer; however, sunscreen was not always applied (Lawler et al., 2012; Walke...

Drugs are medications or substances that are used to modify physiologic responses and alleviate associated symptoms. In dermatology, medications and substances are utilized on a daily basis and include topical treatments to anesthetics in micrographic surgery to biologic-acting immunologic agents. The purposes of this section are to focus on drug, specifically how it works and how it is utilized, and to discuss routine alternatives (if available). Surgical Flaps in Mohs Micrographic Surgery
Skin cancer can be broadly categorized into melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC). Squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma are the most common subtypes of NMSC. When a patient presents with a skin finding suspect for NMSC, a confirming skin biopsy is performed. On the basis of the biopsy results, patient factors, and clinical characteristics of the cancer, an appropriate form of treatment is selected. Mohs micrographic surgery (or Mohs) is a tissue-sparing surgical approach, utilizing frozen section margin control. Once removal of the NMSC has been assured by Mohs surgery, the resultant skin defect is evalua...

To Mohs or Not to Mohs: Considering the Elderly Patient
Mohs micrographic surgery is a common procedure used to treat nonmelanoma skin cancers. With a clearance rate of approximately 98% in small primary basal cell carcinomas and approximately 97% in small primary squamous cell carcinomas, it is the gold standard of care. When considering a Mohs procedure, several criteria are reviewed and evaluated to make sure that Mohs is an appropriate treatment option for the specific tumor, and that the patient is an appropriate candidate to undergo Mohs. However, there are no such criteria for a specific age or functional status at which Mohs is deemed inappropriate (Connolly et al., 201...
