Translucent Cyst Around the Eyelid
A translucent cyst adjacent to the left lateral canthus enlarged slowly over 2 years in a 48-year-old woman. Readers will be challenged to choose the correct diagnosis based on case presentation, history, and symptoms. The differential diagnosis of translucent, cystic lesions on the face requires a careful assessment because both benign and malignant lesions must be considered. Cutaneous Manifestations of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Inflammation driven by immune-mediated mechanisms can lead to a wide variety of skin manifestations. Cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE), for example, is an autoimmune connective tissue disease that may be limited to the skin or be part of the widespread multiorgan involvement seen in systemic lupus erythematosus. Clinical findings are divided into lupus-specific (acute, subacute, and chronic) and nonspecific skin lesions. Dermal Melanocytosis
Dermal melanocytosis includes a spectrum of benign diseases, including congenital dermal melanocytosis, nevus of Ota, and nevus of Ito. Congenital dermal melanocytosis is blue–gray pigmentation typically on the lumbar or sacral regions. Affected areas outside the lumbar or sacral region are less likely to fade with time. Nevus of Ota is usually a unilateral blue–gray pigmentation change of the face in the distribution of the first and second divisions of the trigeminal nerve. Yellow Plaques Around the Eyes
A 67-year-old Black man was found to have skin-colored papules and plaques on the eyelids with a yellow hue on routine annual skin examination. The patient was asymptomatic. The differential diagnosis for papules and plaques on the eyelids is reviewed based on presentations, patient histories, and distinguishing visual features. Lesions in skin of color may present a diagnostic challenge as the appearance of the same lesion in a variety of skin tones may not appear commonly in textbooks.
