Gamification of graduate medical education in an emergency medicine residency program
ConclusionsThis study was a first-of-its-kind look into a longitudinal game in an emergency medicine residency program. Although our results are encouraging, medical educators need further research to determine if this increase in motivation, engagement, and challenge will be associated with an increase in examination scores or, more importantly, healthcare outcomes. Theory-based, broader-scale, prospective studies are needed to further explore and help establish these associations and outcomes. (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

Impact of integrating out-of-hours services into Emergency Medical Services Copenhagen: a descriptive study of transformational years
ConclusionsThere is a population demand for a centralized telephone access point for (semi-)emergency medical services. A more integrated EMS system is promising for a sustainable healthcare provision for a growing population with complex healthcare demands and multi-morbidities. Cervical cord reperfusion injury: a rare complication of spine surgery
ConclusionCervical cord reperfusion injury is an extremely rare etiology of neurological deterioration following spinal cord decompressive surgeries. Clinicians need to maintain a high index of suspicion for this complication and should be familiar with its imaging appearance. (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

Evaluation of the use of individualized patient care plans in frequent emergency department visitors with pain complaints
ConclusionThe authors describe their experience with a quality improvement initiative that identifies frequent emergency department visitors with a chief complaint of pain and provides individualized care plans to these patients. Abdominal pain and fever in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus: a case report
ConclusionsNeutropenic enterocolitis, typically presenting with fever, abdominal pain, and hematochezia, can be difficult to identify, particularly in patients without a history of malignancy. However, it should be considered in patients with HIV presenting with these symptoms, even with a normal ANC and CD4 count above 200 cells/mm3. Prompt diagnosis can be made with CT, and early initiation of broad-spectrum antibiotics greatly reduces the risk of morbidity/mortality. (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

Isolated sternal fracture after low-energy trauma in a geriatric patient: a case report
ConclusionsGeriatric patients can present in the ED with a rare sternal fracture even after only a minor chest trauma. Appropriate imaging and an ECG are warranted to exclude life-threatening additional injuries. An in-depth physical examination and an understanding of the exact mechanism of injury are important to avoid missing fractures in unexpected locations. Modern ED physicians could have an important role in the secondary prevention of fall-related fractures for geriatric patients. (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

Homelessness and the use of Emergency Department as a source of healthcare: a systematic review
ConclusionsDrug-, alcohol- and injury-related presentations dominate the ED visits by PEH. Wide variations in the data were observed in regard to attendance and treatment outcomes. There is a need for prevention actions in the community, integrated discharge and referral pathways between health, housing and social care to minimise frequent usage and improve attendance outcomes. Complex poisoning mainly with benzyl alcohol complicated by paralytic ileus: a case report
ConclusionsTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of paralytic ileus caused by benzyl alcohol, although multiple factors may have influenced the symptoms. After exposure to benzyl alcohol by inhalation and dermal absorption, the patient developed impaired consciousness, metabolic acidosis, and paralytic ileus, and the presence of elevated urinary hippuric acid led to a definitive diagnosis.
