Outcomes of critically ill COVID-19 patients boarding in the emergency department of a tertiary care center in a developing country: a retrospective cohort study
ConclusionTo conclude, all efforts need to be drawn to re-establish mitigation strategies and models of critical care delivery in the ED to alleviate the burden of critical boarders during pandemics, thus decreasing morbidity and mortality rates. Lessons from this pandemic should raise concern for complications seen in ED ICU boarders and allow the promotion of health measures optimizing resource allocation in future pandemic crises. Outcomes of prehospital traumatic cardiac arrest managed by helicopter emergency medical service personnel in Japan: a registry data analysis
ConclusionsThe results of our study were similar to those reported in previous studies with regards to the use of HEMS in Japan for transporting patients with TCA. Our findings suggest that in patients with severe trauma, cardiac arrest after initiation of HEMS, the highest level of prehospital medical intervention, may be associated with an inferior prognosis. Tracheal intubation and administration of tranexamic acid by the EMS team may increase the rate of ROSC in TCA. (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

Understanding patient non-transport decision theories in the pre-hospital setting: a narrative review
ConclusionsThe issue of patient non-conveyance to hospitals continues to pose a crucial challenge to the seamless operation of emergency healthcare systems, warranting increased attention from various healthcare entities. To comprehend and pinpoint potential areas of improvement, a comprehensive analysis of pre-hospital non-transport events is imperative. A well-informed, strategic approach could prevent resource waste while ensuring patients receive the required and definitive care.Key messagesWhy is this topic important? Some studies have suggested that non-transport to hospitals following emergency calls is safe. However...

Determinants of hypertensive crisis among hypertensive patients at adult emergency departments of public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2021: a case –control study
ConclusionThis study demonstrated a statistically significant association between unemployment, diabetes mellitus, stroke, heart failure, history of hypertension, family history of hypertension, and regular follow-up with a hypertensive crisis. The Ethiopian Ministry of Health, Ababa City Administration Health Bureau, and hospitals shall give due attention to the HTN crisis. Health care workers, hospital managers, and other stakeholders shall work towards the early detection and management of HTN-crisis to prevent related morbidity, disability, and mortality. Provision of bystander CPR for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the Middle East: a retrospective gender-based analysis
ConclusionsOverall, bystander CPR was less common in female gender; after adjustment for other covariates, including arrest location, we found no significant gender differences in provision of bystander CPR. We also observed that females were found to have a lower incidence of cardiac arrest in public locations. Nevertheless, if females were to experience cardiac arrest in a public location, they would be more likely to receive CPR. Further research is required to explain the observed differences in provision of bystander CPR. (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

Do patients referred to emergency departments after being assessed in primary care differ from other ED patients? Retrospective analysis of a random sample from two German metropolitan EDs
ConclusionReferred patients were more often admitted. They received more laboratory investigations, ultrasound examinations, and computed tomographies. Difficult decisions regarding the necessity of admission requiring typical resources of EDs may be a reason for PCP referrals. (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

Lethal abdominal compartment syndrome after extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation in a patient with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: a case report
ConclusionsWe report a case of a patient with OHCA who developed lethal ACS after ECPR. Despite this, the patient was able to recover from several major crises. Regardless of how lethal the patient is, if compartment syndrome develops in any part of the body, we should aggressively consider surgical decompression. Screening Tool Risk Score Assessment in the Emergency Department for Geriatric (S-TRIAGE) in 28-day mortality
ConclusionThis study showed malignancy, hypotension, increased SI, and mental status change were predictive factors for 28-day mortality in older adults in the ED. The screening tool risk score for geriatrics used in this study is potentially a good predictor of mortality and lifesaving intervention in high-risk older patients in the ED.
