Evaluation of baseline pediatric readiness of emergency departments in Manitoba, Canada
ConclusionsThe pediatric readiness of the general EDs across Manitoba is comparable to other Canadian region, yet some domains need to be improved. (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

Clostridium myonecrosis — a rare and underdiagnosed condition in the elderly: a case with severe skipping lesions and an overview of treatment guidelines
We present an unusual and severe case of spontaneousclostridial myonecrosis (SCM) in an elderly patient, with severe skipping lesions spread throughout the body. CT imaging, combined with postmortem available blood cultures, confirmed the diagnosis. We noted an underrepresentation of SCM in the cohort of elderly patients ( ≥ 85 years), upon a review of case reports in the literature over the last decade. Given the worldwide demographic change resulting in an increase in the number of visits to emergency departments for this age group, it is likely that SCM is underdiagnosed in these elderly patients. This case repor t ai...

Isolated comminuted fracture of the cricoid cartilage and narrowing of the airway after a traumatic blunt injury of the neck: a case report
ConclusionThis case report highlights the conservative treatment of isolated cricoid cartilage fracture in the setting of low-energy blunt trauma. The patient was clinically stable and treated conservatively with oxygen therapy and silence therapy (complete silence). (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

Comparison of in-hospital and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest of trauma patients in Qatar
ConclusionIn traumatic cardiac arrest patients, IHCAT was less common than OHTCA and might be related to a greater proportion of solitary localized anatomical blunt injuries (head/abdomen/chest/spine). In contrast, OHTCA patients were associated with diffuse blunt non-localizable polytrauma injuries with increased severity leading to immediate cardiac arrest. IHCAT was associated with a higher mean GCS score and a higher rate of initial shockable rhythm and cardiac re-arrest, and improved survival rates. Palliative care team in a Brazilian tertiary emergency department
ConclusionThe present work showed that early intervention by an elaborate and complex PCT in the ED was associated with a faster perception of the need for palliative care and influenced a reduction in the length of hospital stay in a very dependent and compromised old population. External ventricular drain placement is associated with lower mortality after intracerebral hemorrhage with intraventricular hemorrhage
ConclusionIVH is relatively common after ICH. After controlling for potential confounds, EVD placement is associated with lower mortality, but not clearly with better neurologic outcome. In addition, more rapid EVD placement is associated with higher mortality, potentially reflecting early development of herniation or obstructive hydrocephalus. Pneumococcal meningitis secondary to otitis media in two patients with COVID-19 omicron variant
ConclusionsThe omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus can promote the development of otitis media and secondary acute bacterial meningitis. S. pneumoniae is one of the main bacteria involved in this process. (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

Prevalence of pathological arrhythmia in patients triaged to “cardiac arrhythmia” in the emergency department: a preliminary study
ConclusionA total of 1.8% of patients who presented to our interdisciplinary emergency department were triaged for cardiac arrhythmia. With 49.5%, the hospital admission rate was quite high but the patients presented to the emergency department in our cohort were rarely in critical condition. As a high percentage of our cohort had a history of cardiac arrhythmia, better outpatient management is needed for these patients to reduce emergency department visits and save resources. Comparison of the novel WEst coast System for Triage (WEST) with Rapid Emergency Triage and Treatment System (RETTS ©): an observational pilot study
ConclusionsWEST may reduce over prioritization at the ED, especially in the orange and yellow triage levels of RETTS ©, with no observed increase in medical risk. WEST can be recommended for a clinical comparative study. (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

Case series: acupuncture-related pneumothorax
ConclusionEmergency physicians should be vigilant of this potentially serious and life-threatening complication for anyone presenting with chest discomfort and/or breathlessness after recently undergoing acupuncture to ensure earlier diagnosis, management, and better patient outcome. Characteristics and outcomes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Thailand
ConclusionsDuring the COVID-19 pandemic in Thailand, ED ROSC and survival to admission in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients were significantly reduced. Additionally, the witness responses and mode of chest compression were very different between the two groups.Trial registrationThis trial was retrospectively registered on 7 December 2021 in the Thai Clinical Trial Registry, identification number TCTR20211207006. Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome and cannabis withdrawal syndrome: a review of the management of cannabis-related syndrome in the emergency department
ConclusionThe correct identification of the underlying cannabis-related syndrome, and subsequent therapeutic choice, may help decrease ED presentations. Our study emphasizes the importance of both acute care and long-term outpatient follow-up, as key processes in cannabis-related disorder treatment. Predictors of neurological outcome after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: sex-based analysis: do males derive greater benefit from hypothermia management than females?
ConclusionsMales had significantly higher crude rates of survival with favorable neurological outcome. However, the adjusted rate was not statistically significant. Males derived significantly greater benefit from hypothermia management than females, but this can possibly be explained by differences in arrest characteristics or in-hospital treatment. In-depth confirmatory studies on the hypothermia effect size by sex are required. (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

The long-term impact of the earthquake on substance use
AbstractEarthquake is associated with several health conditions such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and cardiovascular disease. However, the association between earthquakes and substance use has been less studied to date. We conducted a historical cohort study 17  years after the Bam earthquake by enrolling 818 households using multi-stage cluster sampling. The sample consisted of earthquake-exposed and non-exposed citizens. The ASSIST screening test was used to determine substance use. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association of va riables of interest with substance use. Nea...
