Medical visits and health-care expenditures of patients attending orthopedic clinics during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan: LIFE Study
ConclusionAs orthopedic clinics in Japan are reimbursed using a fee-for-service system, the increases in per capita expenditures after the state of emergency may be indicative of physician-induced demand. However, we posit that it is more likely that a post-emergency increase in anti-inflammatory and analgesic treatments for spondylopathies, low back pain and sciatica induced a temporary rise in these expenditures. A quality improvement initiative using peer audit and feedback to improve compliance
ConclusionBoth implementation fidelity and acceptability of the intervention were high —the present intervention seems suitable for regular monitoring of the quality of SSC application with internal resources. Peer observation facilitated identifying weaknesses regarding the SSC process and application at item level. Across all hospitals, the Sign Out section in general, visual cont rol for item checks and lack of work interruption of all team members during SSC application showed up as the main areas of improvement. Factors associated with having home care physicians as an integrated source of medications for chronic conditions among homebound patients
ConclusionsThe finding suggests that building trust and enhancing communication among homebound patients, caregivers and home care physicians are critical. Patient and provider variations highlight the need for further improvement and policy modification for medication reconciliation and management in home care settings. The improvement in medication management and care integration in home care settings may reduce misuse and polypharmacy and improve homebound patients ’ safety. Ensuring medication safety for consumers from ethnic minority backgrounds: The need to address unconscious bias within health systems
AbstractMedication safety remains a pertinent issue for health systems internationally, with patients from ethnic minority backgrounds recognized at increased risk of exposure to harm resulting from unsafe medication practices. While language and communication barriers remain a central issue for medication safety for patients from ethnic minority backgrounds, increasing evidence suggests that unconscious bias can alter practitioner behaviours, attitudes and decision-making leading to unsafe medication practices for this population. Systemwide, service and individual level approaches such as cultural competency training and...

Effect of a waiting room communication strategy on imaging rates and awareness of public health messages for low back pain
ConclusionA communication strategy displayed in the ED waiting room may slightly reduce the proportion of patients with low back pain who receive lumbar imaging, although there is uncertainty due to imprecision. The campaign did not appear to increase awareness of campaign messages or affect patient satisfaction in a sample of patients presenting to the ED for any reason. Larger studies should investigate whether simple, low-cost waiting room communication strategies can raise awareness of unnecessary healthcare and influence health-care quality.Trial registrationACTRN12620000300976, 05/03/2020 (Source: International Journ...
