Impact of an educational intervention on WHO surgical safety checklist and pre-operative antibiotic use at a referral hospital in southwestern Uganda
ConclusionsAn educational intervention, daily audit and feedback to clinicians increased the use of the WHO SSC and prophylactic antibiotics for cesarean delivery —although the rates waned with time. Research to understand factors influencing the checklist use and antibiotic prophylaxis including prescriber knowledge, motivation and clinical process is required. Implementation interventions to sustain usage and impact on clinical outcomes need to be explore d. (Source: International Journal for Quality in Health Care)

Implementation research on measuring quality in primary care: balancing national needs with learning from the Eastern Mediterranean Region
ConclusionA cross-regional set of 34 quality indicators of PHC in the EMR was developed and adopted by a diverse group of countries. The toolkit showed high feasibility in pilot testing reflecting the practicality needed to encourage local uptake and sustainability. The core quality indicators are highly adaptable to different local and regional contexts regardless of current PHC strength or available resources. Continuous evaluation and sharing lessons of implementation and use are needed to ascertain the indicators ’ effectiveness in driving improvements in PHC and to refine and strengthen the evidence supporting the s...

Combined lumbar spine MRI and CT appropriateness checklist: a quality improvement project in Saskatchewan, Canada
ConclusionsThe combined checklist with evidence-based indications for lumbar spine MRI and CT imaging in LBP patients appeared to reduce the complexity associated with two previous individual checklists and facilitate imaging appropriateness. Accountable benefits may include the reduction of radiation exposure as a result of unnecessary and repeated imaging and reduction in wait times for CT and/or MRI. A retrospective single-site data-linkage study comparing manual to electronic data abstraction for routine post-operative nausea and vomiting audit
ConclusionElectronic audit enrolled more patients and identified a lower PONV rate than manual audit, likely from less enrolment bias. Electronic audit was easily repeated over a 6-month period. While electronic PONV audit is possible without additional software, an electronic anaesthetic chart would greatly improve audit quality. (Source: International Journal for Quality in Health Care)

Provider experience and satisfaction with a novel ‘virtual team rounding’ program during the COVID-19 pandemic
ConclusionAs the pandemic continues, rapidly implementing and studying virtual care delivery programs is crucial for hospitals and health systems. We demonstrate the feasibility and acceptability of a ‘virtual rounding’ program assisting inpatient providers. Future work should examine the impact of these programs on patient outcomes. Variation in hospital performance measures from the Turkey Ministry of Health
ConclusionsEvidence of temporal improvement in hospital-level performance may suggest some positive changes within the Turkish national healthcare system. Correlation of some measures with regional level health outcomes suggests a quality measurement strategy to monitor performance changes in the future. Although hospital-level functions have improved performance, the results of our study may help achieve further improvement for the health of the country ’s citizens. Predictors of patient-reported quality of care in low- and middle-income countries: a four-country survey of person-centered care
ConclusionPatient-reported QOC is low in four LMICs, even among a well-educated, young population of internet users. Better health system responsiveness may be associated with better ratings of care quality. Improving person-centered care will be an important component of building high-quality health systems in these LMICs. (Source: International Journal for Quality in Health Care)

Improving accuracy of American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status using audit and feedback and artificial intelligence: a time-series analysis
ConclusionsOur quality improvement efforts successfully modified clinician behavior to accurately incorporate BMI into the ASA PS classification. By combining audit and feedback methodology with a rule-based artificial intelligence algorithm, we created a process that resulted in immediate and sustained effects. Improving ASA PS classification accuracy is important because it affects quality metrics, research design, resource allocation and workflow processes. Home before Hospital: a whole of system re-design project to improve rates of home-based dialysis therapy: Experience and outcomes over 8 years
ConclusionHaving the system-wide approach to a Quality Improvement Process and using established principles and change management processes, the successful implementation of a new sustainable model of care focussed on home-based dialysis therapy was achieved. A key feature of the model (through outreach) was early nurse-led education and support of patients in decision-making and ongoing support through multidisciplinary care. What makes a good quality indicator set? A systematic review of criteria
ConclusionThe concept of content validity and its component criteria help assessing whether conclusions based on a set of indicators are valid conclusions about the targeted construct. To develop a valid indicator set, careful definition of the targeted construct including its (sub-)domains is paramount. Developers of quality indicators should specify the purpose of measurement and consider trade-offs with other criteria for indicator sets whose application may reduce content validity (e.g. costs of measurement) in light thereof. How is the Theoretical Domains Framework applied in designing interventions to support healthcare practitioner behaviour change? A systematic review
ConclusionDespite over three thousand citations of the framework there has been limited application to the point of designing interventions to support best practice. The framework is barely used in non-western countries or beyond primary or acute care settings. A stated purpose of the framework was to make psychological theory accessible to researchers and practitioners alike; if this is to be fully achieved, further guidance is needed on the application of the framework beyond the point of assessment of barriers and facilitators.
