Does implementation of a tailored intervention increase adherence to a National Safety and Quality Standard? A study to improve delirium care
ConclusionTranslation of evidence-based intervention model incorporating well-considered implementation strategies had a mixed impact on decreasing the rate of delirium. The scheduled hospital accreditation enhanced the use of validated screening tool to recognize delirium. This project highlights the importance of aligning implementation goals with the wider goals of the organization as well as making clinicians accountable by consistent auditing. Variability in the assessment of children ’s primary healthcare in 30 European countries
ConclusionsA limited set of measures are shared across countries hampering a robust comparison of paediatric models. The selection of measures shows that the evaluation is closely related to national priorities as resulting from the number and types of measures adopted. Moreover, a range of a reasonable number of measures can be hypothesized to address the quality of childcare under a multi-dimensional perspective. Intended and unintended changes in length of stay following reconfiguration of emergency care departments
ConclusionThe nationwide reconfiguration of acute hospital care was overall not associated with change in trend for the registered LOS and no change in trend for overnight stays. However, the results varied according to hospitalization time, where admissions during weekends and nights after the reconfiguration were associated with shortened LOS. The prevalence and underreporting of needlestick injuries among hospital workers: a cross-sectional study
ConclusionsNSIs and underreporting are common among HWs from all sectors, including those who do not use needles. Improving preventive measures and reporting should be encouraged. We recommend reducing bedside procedures as possible and assigning two workers to procedures at risk for injuries, to increase the report rate. Is the ‘never event’ concept a useful safety management strategy in complex primary healthcare systems?
AbstractWhy is the area important?A sub-group of rare but serious patient safety incidents, known as ‘never events,’ is judged to be ‘avoidable.’ There is growing interest in this concept in international care settings, including UK primary care. However, issues have been raised regarding the well-intentioned coupling of ‘preventable harm’ with zero tolerance ‘never events,’ especia lly around the lack of evidence for such harm ever being totally preventable. What is already known and gaps in knowledge? We consider whether the ideal of reducing preventable harm to ‘never’ is better for patient safety than...

HFE at the frontiers of COVID-19. Human factors/ergonomics to support the communication for safer care in Italy during the COVID-19 pandemic
AbstractItaly was the first country after China to be affected by COVID-19. The wave of the emergency found our country unprepared to cope with the surge of patients going to first aid departments to seek assistance in the almost complete paralysis of community health. Human factors and ergonomics (HFE) can effectively contribute to, and improve the effectiveness of, a pandemic response working on several key areas: training, adapting workflows and processes, restructuring teams and tasks, effective mechanisms and tools for communication, engaging patients and families and learning from failures and successes. In Italy, HF...

Patient satisfaction with outpatient care in China: a comparison of public secondary and tertiary hospitals
ConclusionThe aforementioned results suggested that tertiary hospitals face larger challenges in patient satisfaction with outpatient care than secondary hospitals. Measures must be adopted to improve patient satisfaction with outpatient care in future healthcare reforms. Patient waiting time, medical expenses and treatment duration especially require improvements in tertiary hospitals. (Source: International Journal for Quality in Health Care)

A comparative analysis: international variation in PET-CT service provision in oncology —an International Cancer Benchmarking Partnership study
ConclusionsVariation in PET-CT scanner quantity, acquisition over time and guidance upon use exists internationally. There is a lack of routinely captured and accessible PET-CT data across the International Cancer Benchmarking Partnership countries due to inconsistent data definitions, data linkage issues, uncertain coverage of data and lack of specific coding. This is a barrier in improving the quality of PET-CT services globally. There needs to be greater, richer data capture of diagnostic and staging tools to facilitate learning of best practice and optimize cancer services.
