[Prevalence and Co-prevalence of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) in Hand Rehabilitation].
Authors: Neubrech F, Gentzsch T, Kotsougiani D, Bickert B, Kneser U, Harhaus L Abstract Background: In the current literature, there are reports of associations between complex regional pain syndromes (CRPS) and carpal tunnel syndromes (CTS). The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of both disease patterns in hand rehabilitation patients and to investigate whether there is a correlation between CTS and CRPS. Furthermore, differences in the healing process of patients with and without additional CTS, and the effectiveness of the rehabilitative therapy for both diseases, were investigated. Patients and ...

Conclusions: In Switzerland, fasciectomy is the preferred option for treating patients with Dupuytren's disease. In recent years, however, collagenase injection has become more and more popular. More research is needed to define guidelines for the treatment of patients with Dupuytren's disease considering the effectiveness of the different treatment options and regional preferences. Academic Status of Plastic Surgery in the United States and the Relevance of Independence.
Conclusions: There are multiple advantages to seeking department status such as financial and administrative autonomy, ability to participate in medical school curricula, easier access to interdepartmental institutes and faculties, parity with other specialties, and increased control of resident education. There has been concerted advocacy for separating from surgery departments and seeking independent departmental status for plastic surgery. However, the transition from a division to department is a slow and demanding process and requires a well-planned strategy. PMID: 27096203 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Sou...

CONCLUSION: This study showed that sufficient multipotent ASPCs of appropriate quality can be isolated from the inguinal fat pad of Wistar rats using the ARC™-cell separation system. As shown in previous studies, cultivation of cells under hypoxic conditions increased their stemness. [What went wrong? Analysis of Medical Malpractice Arbitration Proceedings Conducted by a German Arbitration Board after Breast Reductions].
DISCUSSION: The higher rate of liability claims may be due to the fact the surgical procedures changing the shape of breasts are more complex than generally expected. Not only the surgery itself, but also the adequate planning and aftercare are of predominant importance for patient satisfaction. All these factors lead to the relatively high rate of medical malpractice in plastic aesthetic breast surgery. Also the communication factor should not be underestimated. [Comparison of Treatments for an Infected Pilonidal Sinus: Differences in Scar Quality and Outcome Between Secondary Wound Healing and Limberg Flap in a Prospective Study].
CONCLUSION: Wound closure via Limberg flap after the excision of an infected pilonidal sinus not only helps to reduce absence from work, but also produces a scar which is more distensible and movable compared with secondary healing. Patient satisfaction and pain scores were very good in both groups, with no differences observed by us. We are planning to collect more data with a bigger sample of patients and a longer follow-up period in future studies. For the time being, we will continue to provide both treatment methods to our patients. PMID: 27096210 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Handchirurgie Mikrochirurgie Plastische Chirurgie)

Clinical Presentation, Surgical Treatment, and Outcome in Radial Polydactyly.
Authors: Dijkman RR, van Nieuwenhoven CA, Hovius SE, Hülsemann W Abstract Radial polydactyly or 'thumb duplication' is the most common congenital upper limb anomaly ('CULA') affecting the thumb. The clinical presentation is highly diverse, ranging from an extra thumb floating on a skin bridge to complicated thumb triplications with triphalangeal, deviating, and hypoplastic components. Radial polydactyly can be classified into one of 7 osseous presentations using the Wassel classification, with type IV (45%), type II (20%), and type VII (15%) occurring most frequently. When faced with a radial polydactyly case,...

Authors: Mailänder L, Piza-Katzer H Abstract Congenital fibrosarcoma is a rare mesenchymal soft tissue tumour, which most commonly develops in the peripheral extremities during infancy. Diagnostic work-up is a challenge for clinicians and pathologists alike, because in many cases the lesion initially resembles a haemangioma on macroscopic inspection. A 4-month-old boy presented with a strongly vascularised tumour of the left index finger, which had been diagnosed as a capillary haemangioma by means of a biopsy performed in another facility. The lesion had been treated with systemic and intralesional cortisone ...

[Reconstruction of Defects after Oncologic Resection and Radiation - Indications for Microsurgical Reconstruction].
This article describes a number of local conservative treatment options, all of which have limited success rates. In addition, it describes plastic surgical treatment options for radiation-induced local morbidity. Surgical reconstruction includes the full range of plastic reconstructive techniques. However, less complex options such as random pattern flaps or split thickness skin grafts are often associated with complications. Therefore, a large number of cases require free tissue transfer.
