A Tool for Grammatical Development Assessment in a Second Language
Objective: This paper describes an alternative assessment tool for second language learning, based on Processing Theory (PT). The basis of this theory is that language learners cannot acquire what they cannot process. This paper presents a tool, based on this theory that avoids the over- or under-diagnosis of language impairment in second language learners.Method: This tool has five levels, with the prerequisites for the following step at each level. Each level is designed to determine children ’s ability to process language factors required at each stage. The five levels begin with identification and acquisition of word...

Speech and Language Therapy Services for Multilingual Children with Migration Background: A Cross-Sectional Survey in Germany
This study examines the current provision of SLT services for multilingual children following a medical prescription for the specific case of suspected language disorder. Information was obtained from speech-language pathologists (SLPs) representing 28 practices in different districts across one of the moderately largest cities affected by sociospatial polarization. The SLT practices were clustered according to the proportion of minor migrants and minor welfare recipients in the district. The survey included the number and proportion of multilingual children on the SLT caseloads, as well as the age of children by time of r...

Evaluating Personal Stroke Narratives from Bilingual Greek-English Immigrants with Aphasia
Conclusion: The results have implications for policy-makers providing health and welfare services to ageing immigrant populations. The findings are also relevant to other countries that have large immigrant populations of stroke survivors.Folia Phoniatr Logop 2019;71:101 –115 (Source: Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica)

Does Efficacy Equal Lasting Impact? A Study of Intervention Short Term Gains, Impact on Diagnostic Status, and Association with Background Variables
Conclusions: Results suggest that intervention could be more efficacious by giving more therapy sessions and conducting evaluation and treatment closer in time.Folia Phoniatr Logop 2019;71:71 –82 (Source: Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica)

Emergent Literacy Support for Children from Marginalised Populations
Background: The purpose of this paper is to describe the content and process of a literacy and language support model that was implemented with young children from marginalised communities, where no access to speech and language pathologist (SLP) services exists. The importance of language for literacy development is emphasised with explicit strategies for classroom application.Method: The SLP introduced an intervention programme to Early Childhood Development (ECD) kindergarten teachers, as part of a pre- and post-test literacy study. The strategies included oral reading, one-on-one reading and paired-reading. The partici...

Water Resistance Therapy as Vocal Warm-Up Method in Contemporary Commercial Music Singers
Conclusion: Some objective data suggest that the WRT method is more effective as vocal warm-up than OVT exercises. Since outcomes in self-perceived resonant voice quality for both methods were similar but physiological effects were different, vocal warm-up strategies might produce a placebo effect.Folia Phoniatr Logop (Source: Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica)

Speech, Language, and Communication in a Public Health Context: A UK Perspective with Potential Global Application – An Opinion Piece

Inspiratory and Expiratory Flow Changes, Voice Symptoms and Laryngeal Findings during Histamine Challenge Tests
Conclusion: The relative changes in inspiratory and expiratory air flow and voice and throat symptoms during the histamine challenge test correlated. The vocal fold oedema caused by the histamine challenge, visible on videolaryngostroboscopy, did not significantly affect the spirometry air flow values.Folia Phoniatr Logop (Source: Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica)
