Tongue and Lip Acceleration as a Measure of Speech Decline in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Purpose: The goal of this study was to examine the efficacy of acceleration-based articulatory measures in characterizing the decline in speech motor control due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Method: Electromagnetic articulography was used to record tongue and lip movements during the production of 20 phrases. Data were collected from 50 individuals diagnosed with ALS. Articulatory kinematic variability was measured using the spatiotemporal index (STI) of both instantaneous acceleratio n and speed signals. Linear regression models were used to analyze the relationship between variability measures and intelligib...

Speech in Noise: Implications of Age, Hearing Loss, and Cognition
Conclusion: The final model accounted for 76.2% of the variance in SIN. The results suggested that sloping hearing loss, aging, and cognitive decline affected auditory performance, and the poor performance starts from an early age. Additionally, the findings indicated that a more comprehensive approach might be recommended to evaluate the listening skills and identify communication problems.Folia Phoniatr Logop (Source: Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica)

Speech in Noise: Implications of Age, Hearing Loss and Cognition
Introduction: Individuals with hearing loss have reduced hearing sensitivity and may not adequately process the temporal cues in acoustic signals. Cognitive skills that decrease with aging and hearing loss contribute negatively on the ability to understand speech. Hence, they may experience communication problems in noisy environments. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of sloping high frequency hearing loss on speech perception in noise and to examine the impact of temporal and cognitive processing in young and middle-age adults. Methods: Speech in noise (SIN), temporal processing and cognitive tests were...

Development and Preliminary Validation of the Questionnaire “Evaluation of the Constitution of Social Circles” in Patients Treated for Cancer of the Upper Aerodigestive Tract
Conclusion: While the test-retest reliability is yet to be evaluated and the sample size should be increased, this preliminary study shows that the ECSC is a valid tool for assessing the constitution of social circles in patients treated for UADT cancer. It highlights the links between social circles and their functional impact on communication and QOL. (Source: Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica)

Development and preliminary validation of the questionnaire 'Evaluation of the constitution of social circles (ECSC)' in patients treated for cancer of the upper aerodigestive tract
The objective of this study is to develop a questionnaire that assesses the constitution of social circles in a population treated for UADT cancer and to analyze the construct and criterion validity. Methods: The Evaluation of the Constitution of Social Circles (ECSC) questionnaire was developed in French by a committee of experts. Structural validity was analyzed using inter-item correlations. The scores of a group of patients treated for UADT cancer were compared with those of a group of healthy subjects (clinical validity). For criterion validity, the ECSC scores were compared to those from various questionnaires that ...

The efficacy of structural priming in the production of sentences with prepositions in Persian patients with post stroke aphasia
Conclusion: The findings of the present study revealed that SP for sentences with prepositions could be useful to varying degrees for Persian-speaking PWA with agrammatism and lead to improved language skills in producing these sentences. Overall, individuals with better language skills and cognitive status in early assessments showed better treatment outcomes than others. (Source: Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica)

A Study of Voice Handicap and Acoustic Measures in Arab Kuwaiti Prospective Professional Singers
Conclusion: Kuwaiti p rospective professional singers did not perceive their voice as handicapped. Female prospective professional singers had a better perception of their voice compared with female controls. The results of the current study suggest that the perception of voice handicap and acoustic measures are differen t attributes that do not correlate (Source: Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica)

Perception of children ’s productions of /l/: Acoustic correlates and effects of listener experience
Conclusion: These results indicate that more experienced listeners use a VAS to indicate perception of subphonemic features of children's productions of /l/ than less experienced listeners, and that these ratings correlate with acoustic measures. Furthermore, listeners with experience with child speech and phonetic training are more sensitive to subphonemic features of children’s productions of /l/, especially for misarticulated productions. This supports the clinical use of visual analog scales for perceptual judgments of children's /l/ productions. (Source: Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica)

Effect of FFP2/3 Masks on Voice Range Profile Measurement and Voice Acoustics in Routine Voice Diagnostics
Conclusion: It can be concluded that VRP measurements including DSI performed with FFP2/3 masks provide reliable data in clinical routine with respect to voice condition/constitution. Spectral analyses of sustained vowel, text, and singer ’s formant will be affected by wearing FFP2/3 masks.Folia Phoniatr Logop (Source: Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica)

Clinician and Patient Perception of a Voice Therapy Program Utilizing a Variably-Occluded Face Mask: A Pilot Study
Discussion: This pilot st udy represents the first investigation into clinician and patient perceptions of using a variably occluded face mask (VOFM). Reported measures via patient perception, as well as clinician perceptions, and some acoustic and aerodynamic measures showed that participants got better with VOFM voice ther apy. Last, in general, both clinicians and patients liked utilizing a VOFM in voice therapy. (Source: Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica)

Chaos Behavior Analysis of Alaryngeal Voices Including Esophageal (SE) and Tracheoesophageal (TE) Voices
This study ’s objective was to develop a method to the evaluate the chaotic characteristic of alaryngeal speech. The proposed method will be capable of distinguishing between normal and alaryngeal voices, including esophageal (SE) and tracheoesophageal (TE) voices. It has been previously shown that alaryngea l voices exhibit chaotic characteristics due to the aperiodicity of their signals. The proposed method will be applied for future use to quantify both chaos behavior and the difference between SE and TE voices. Study Design A total of 74 voice recordings including 34 normal and 40 alaryngeal (26 e sophageal (SE) an...

Complications during Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing in 5,680 Examinations
Conclusions: FEES proved to be easy to perform, well tolerated by the patients and cost-effective. It can be performed at the patient ’s bedside, and it is characterized by a low rate of complications. As a matter of fact, normally only discomfort, gagging and/or vomiting are reported. Complications occurred only rarely, such as anterior or posterior epistaxis episodes or vasovagal crises, but these are still easily managed. Exc eptionally, more severe complications are reported: adverse drug reactions to substances such as blue dye (methylene blue) and local anesthetics (not used in our protocol), and laryngospasm.Folia...
