Laparoscopic intersphincteric resection with hand-sewn coloanal anastomosis in the treatment of low rectal cancer: 10-year experience
ConclusionLaparoscopic ISR with hand-sewn CAA is feasible, safe and has good long-term outcomes for low rectal cancer and might be a  good alternative to APR. More studies are required to better improve long-term outcomes of this surgery. (Source: European Surgery)

Presentation of a  rare, highly aggressive peritoneal disease: desmoplastic small round cell tumor and its therapeutic options
ConclusionOur case report demonstrates a  very rare cause of recurrent abdominal pain. Desmoplastic small round cell tumor is a rare and highly aggressive undifferentiated sarcoma, which mainly affects young men. Treatment options include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, cytoreductive surgery, and/or hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Standardized treatment protocols are still lacking because only a few cases have been described so far. Differential diagnoses include all malignancies with peritoneal masses. Trends in the presentation of patients with esophageal diverticula in the era of endoscopy
ConclusionNowadays, the majority of ED are endoscopically diagnosed and these are less likely to be symptomatic than radiographically diagnosed ED. ED patients are older than previously reported and older patients are less likely to undergo esophageal manometry or surgery. Gastroenterologists and surgeons should be aware of these emerging trends. (Source: European Surgery)

Esophageal resection in Austria —preparing a national registry
ConclusionThis first publication of the Austrian Society of Esophageal Surgery shows that the outcome of esophageal surgery for cancer in Austria compares well with that of renowned international centers. However, a  more comprehensive approach including as many national centers as possible will improve outcome research, offer quality management, and improve patient safety. The study group invites all Austrian institutions performing esophagectomy to participate in the initiative. (Source: European Surgery)

Robotic repair of lateral incisional hernias using intraperitoneal onlay, preperitoneal, and retromuscular mesh placement: a  comparison of mid-term results and surgical technique
ConclusionNo differences in mid-term outcomes between robotic IPOM, TAPP, or RM repair were noted. However, the robotic RM repair allows for significantly larger mesh size and mesh overlap, as well as a  higher mesh-to-defect ratio. (Source: European Surgery)

Robot-assisted laparoscopic rectal surgery: operative technique and initial experiences
ConclusionTaking all aspects into consideration, robotic surgery might be a  good prognostic factor for oncologic and functional outcome. Further technical developments like robotic single-port platforms might even expand the possibilities of dissection. Superior or equal oncological results and long-term outcomes compared to conventional open or laparoscopic techniques ha ve yet to be examined and should be the subject of future randomized clinical trials. Robotic liver surgery —advantages and limitations
ConclusionThe robotic platform is not appropriate for all liver operations at this time. Benefits of robotic surgery are most clearly realized when approaching lesions in the posterior and superior segments, and when a  large incision would be required to remove a small amount of liver parenchyma were the operation to be performed in an open fashion.
