Thoracoabdominal approach for traumatic diaphragmatic hernia in a  hemodynamically unstable patient
ConclusionA  thoracoabdominal incision can safely be used in large strangulated diaphragmatic hernias, including in critically unstable patients. This approach provides rapid access to both the chest and abdomen with excellent, speedy, and safe exposure, which can save a life in extreme conditions. (Source: European Surgery)

Prognostic significance of comorbidities in patients with diffuse peritonitis
ConclusionWe identified age, effusion type, and the presence of comorbidities as key factors for the prognosis of our patients —the morbidity and mortality rates were substantially increased in patients with two or more comorbidities, as well as by the presence of cardiovascular disease, malignancy, and hypertension. A more aggressive approach should be considered to improve the prognosis in these patients. (Source: European Surgery)

Coping with a  lack of evidence: living-donor kidney transplantation in the initial phase of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic
SummaryDue to immunosuppressive therapy, transplant patients are more susceptible to viral and bacterial infections. A  potentially deadly new virus haunted us in 2020: SARS-CoV‑2, causing coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19). We analyzed the consequences of this previously unknown risk for our living-donor transplant program in the first year of the pandemic. After the complete lockdown in spring 2020, our transpl ant center in Linz resumed the living-donor kidney transplantation program from June to September 2020, between the first and second waves of COVID-19 in Austria. Postoperative driving ability after appendectomy
ConclusionOn the first postoperative day, patients who underwent endoscopic appendectomy showed significantly impaired BRT as compared to healthy controls, but no longer after 2  weeks. However, appendectomy patients were always better than BRT thresholds recommended by several driving authorities. Therefore, it seems justified to allow patients to resume driving on the first postoperative day after endoscopically performed appendectomy. (Source: European Surgery)
