Digital implications for human resource management in surgical departments
ConclusionDigital programs, digital structures, and digital tools can today be used by human resources departments to advertise the hospital and to make the recruitment of future candidates increasingly attractive. In addition, by making digital tools available, the employees ’ satisfaction can be raised with the potential of a strong employer branding. In times of the COVID-19 pandemic, digital personnel strategies and training formats have to be regarded a contemporary offering. (Source: European Surgery)

Surgical and financial impact of delayed cholecystectomy in mild and moderate acute cholecystitis
ConclusionDelayed cholecystectomy for mild and moderate cholecystitis was associated with more operative complications and extra financial costs compared to emergency cholecystectomy. (Source: European Surgery)

To what extent should we trust statistics?
SummaryEveryday clinical decisions are based on “statistically” significant or non-significant results, with an exaggerated credit given to statistics. This is due to the interesting dichotomy that statistics respond to: to perform a surgery or not, to give a treatment or not. However, statistics rely on the law of probability and cannot pr ovide definite judgments. This manuscript aims to highlight the statistical flaws in clinical practice from a simple perspective for surgeons. (Source: European Surgery)

Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication versus 90 ° and 180° fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflux disease
ConclusionThe limited evidence fails to provide an unequivocal method of choice, but rather indicates a  trade-off between reflux control and complications. (Source: European Surgery)

Microvascular myocutaneous and cutaneous free flap reconstruction in patients with terminal esophagostomy after complicated oncological esophagus resection
ConclusionMFF free flap can be an alternative treatment option for patients with terminal esophagostomy after complicated oncological esophagus resection without further treatment options. The renewed ability of oral food intake results in a  significant improvement of QOL. (Source: European Surgery)

Appendectomy and women ’s reproductive outcomes: a review of the literature
ConclusionDespite the existence of contrasting opinions concerning fertility after appendectomy, the most recent evidence suggests that appendectomy may actually  lead to improved fertility and decreased time to pregnancy. Appendectomy seems to be correlated with improved fertility and higher pregnancy rates. (Source: European Surgery)

Revisional surgery for recurrent benign bile duct strictures
ConclusionAlthough revisional biliary surgery for recurrent biliary strictures is a  challenging procedure, these revisions can be performed with favorable results. Meticulous preoperative evaluation and implementation of precise surgical technique are essential to achieve long-term success. (Source: European Surgery)

Programmed death ligand  2 expression plays a limited role in adenocarcinomas of the gastroesophageal junction after preoperative chemotherapy
ConclusionIn contrast to previously published studies reporting PD-L2 expression rates of up to 50% in AEGs, in our cohort, PD-L2 expression seems to play no significant role in AEG. (Source: European Surgery)

The role of Notch ligand, Delta-like ligand  4 (DLL4), in cancer angiogenesis—implications for therapy
ConclusionDLL4 seems to be a  promising target in anti-cancer therapy. Nevertheless, the careful evaluation of adverse effects on normal physiological processes in relation to therapeutic doses of anti-DLL4 drugs will be significant for advancement of DLL4 blocking agents in clinical oncology. Seeking outpatient management of right-sided diverticulitis
ConclusionPatients with right diverticulitis had fewer perforations, required lower-spectrum antibiotics, and did not require any surgical treatment, with a  shorter length of hospital stay. Given these results, we consider that mild right diverticulitis could benefit from an outpatient treatment following similar recommendations to those followed for mild LD patients. This is one of the largest series in Western literature and the only one that compar es clinical features, complication rates, and type of treatment between right and left diverticulitis. Outpatient management in RD is a feasible option which is not only s...

Safety and feasibility of single-incision laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal inguinal hernia repair: a  retrospective comparative analysis of 163 patients
ConclusionSIL  TEP is as feasible and safe a procedure as laparoscopic herniorrhaphy. Surgeons familiar with single-incision laparoscopic surgeries like appendectomy or cholecystectomy can begin to perform SIL TEP for hernia repair. (Source: European Surgery)

Porcelain gallbladder and its relationship to cancer
ConclusionPGB is a  disease as rare as it is subtle. Moreover, the chronic stimulation by stones can generate an initial dysplasia that will subsequently turn into a neoplasm: the cancerization risk is probably no different from long-standing cholesterol or combined stones, but as risk factor for cancer it requires early cholecystectomy.
