Referral of emergency surgical patients in a tertiary hospital, addis ababa, ethiopia.
Conclusions: The rate of referral from St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College Emergency Room is high. It is higher in trauma cases, specifically orthopedic and neuro-traumas. Main reason for referrals was lack of bed. The capacity of the hospital and other hospitals in AA in absorbing traumas, specifically orthopedic and neurotraumas need to be evaluated and necessary policy adjustments should be implemented. Further study at each hospital and the whole city gives better picture of referrals among hospitals in Addis Ababa. PMID: 29115121 [PubMed] (Source: Ethiopian Medical Journal)

Mortality and Disability-Adjusted Life-Years (Dalys) for Common Neglected Tropical Diseases in Ethiopia, 1990-2015: Evidence from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015.
CONCLUSIONS: Ethiopia has made a remarkable progress in reducing the DALY rates for most of the NTDs over the last 25 years. The rapid scale of interventions and broader system strengthening may have a lasting impact on achieving the 2020 goal of elimination of most of NTDs. Ethiopia should strengthen the coverage of integrated interventions of NTD through proper coordination with other health programs and sectors and community participation to eliminate NTDs by 2020. Cardiac surgery for valvular heart disease at a referral hospital in ethiopia: a review of cases operated in the last 30 years.
CONCLUSIONS: Valve surgery for valvular heart diseases has been more common performed for young and female patients. A great majority of the replacements done have been with mechanical valves. As many of the patients have been younger and female, the choice of valve surgery and the need for anticoagulation impacts subsequent management of rheumatic heart disease and associated morbidities, lifestyle plans and pregnancy.
