This study aimed to review recent evidence on conservative non-surgical options for erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. A narrative review of the literature was performed. A comprehensive search in the MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases was done. Papers in English language, published from May 2017 until May 2022, were included. Papers reporting basic research or animal research were excluded, as long as reviews or meta-analyses. Congress reports, clinical cases, or clinical trials protocols with no results were also excluded.Recent FindingsWe found a multitude of different treatment modalities for ED. We must take into ...

Penile Implant Instrument Innovations
AbstractPurpose of ReviewNumerous innovations have been made since the first inflatable penile prosthesis was introduced in 1973 —not just of the implant apparatus itself, but crucially also in the surgical instruments used for prosthetic surgery. Starting with Dr. Furlow’s revolutionary inserter tool, advancements were quickly made in dilators, retractors, and cavernotomes.Recent FindingsMore recent innovations have been made in inserter tools, forceps, needle holders, clamps, and disposable instruments. Leading companies Boston Scientific and Coloplast have contributed significantly to the evolution of IPP surgical p...

Interventional Pain Management in the Treatment of Chronic Pelvic Pain
AbstractPurpose of ReviewChronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) is a common yet complex disease in the field of urology, gynecology, and pain management. This review article summarizes the anatomy and physiology of CPP with an in-depth discussion of established and emerging interventional treatment options.Recent FindingsThough psychosocial variables play a significant role in the development and propagation of CPPS, interventional treatment strategies are available to ameliorate symptoms. Sympathetic and peripheral nerve blocks along with chemical and radiofrequency denervation are conventional, evidence-based treatments. Re...

Outcomes Associated with the Endourological Management of Stent Encrustation: Findings from a Literature Review on Behalf of the EAU YAU Urolithiasis Group
AbstractPurpose of ReviewDouble J ureteric stents (DJs) are useful aids for urinary drainage in case of stones or tumour causing ureteric obstruction. Prolonged dwelling time such as when forgotten can lead to encrustation. Our aim was to perform a literature review to evaluate outcomes associated with endourological management of encrusted stents (ES).Recent FindingsThere now exist validated tools which can aid in grading the severity of encrustation and aid operative planning such as the total number of surgeries that may be required. Evaluation of different treatment strategies remains under reported.SummaryRemoval of e...

A Systematic Review of Partner Satisfaction After Penile Prosthesis with Special Emphasis on LGBTQ  + Populations
AbstractPurpose of ReviewDespite the current surgical advances and patients ’ satisfactions after penile prosthesis (PP) implantation, there has been paucity of data on reported partner satisfaction and their quality-of-life (QoL). Our objective was to summarize the current literature on partner satisfaction for both heterosexual and non-heterosexual populations, respecti vely. We specifically conducted a systematic review according to the Cochrane and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) standards, and stratified studies into three tiers by methodological rigor.Recent FindingsAfter...

Robotic-Assisted Surgery —a Highly Effective Modality for Vesicovaginal Fistula Repairs
AbstractPurpose of ReviewTo summarize recent experience with robotic vesicovaginal fistula repair and describe the contemporary technique.Recent FindingsRobotic vesicovaginal repair has been tested at multiple centers, with similar outcomes to open surgery. It has benefits including decreased hospital stay, less blood loss, and similar long-term outcomes. As long as the surgeon is experienced in robotic surgery, this technique appears to be promising.SummaryRobotic vesicovaginal repair results in similar outcomes to open surgery with decreased morbidity. A Common Path: Magnetic Resonance Imaging of M üllerian and Wolffian Duct Anomalies
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis review summarizes the pathway of Mullerian and Wolffian duct development, anomalies that result from disruptions to this pathway, and the characteristics on advanced imaging that identify them.Recent FindingsIn-office evaluation for reproductive anomalies is usually inadequate for the diagnosis of congenital reproductive anomalies. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has usurped invasive diagnostic methods including laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and vasography as the new gold standard. Because of its superior soft-tissue delineation and the availability of advanced functional sequences, MRI offers a...

Ergonomic Considerations in Urologic Surgery
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis paper aims to discuss the various work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMDs) among urologists and provide an overview of the latest recommendations to improve awareness of ergonomic principles that can be applied in the operating room, with special consideration of challenges faced during pregnancy.Recent FindingsUrologists suffer from a large burden of WRMDs. The main drivers of pain associated with the various surgical approaches include repetitive movements, static and awkward body positions, and the use of burdensome equipment. Pregnant surgeons are at an even greater risk of WRMDs and...

Financial Toxicity for Female Patients with Urinary Incontinence
AbstractPurpose of ReviewUrinary incontinence (UI) is a common global condition that has been noted to disproportionately affect women. In this review, the authors present discussion of factors contributing to cost of care and various modalities of cost-effective care for UI for female patients.Recent FindingsWe found insurance and out-of-pocket (OOP) costs strongly impact of costs for patients. Further, in evaluation of UI, diagnosis can be a costly multi-step process for effective treatment. Treatment can be multimodal, including non-surgical (e.g., pessary, vaginal insert, pelvic floor muscle training, or PFMT), of whic...

Should Transperineal Prostate Biopsy Be the Standard of Care?
AbstractPurpose of ReviewWe reviewed the advantages and disadvantages of transperineal prostate biopsy (TP-bx) to evaluate its potential role as the standard of care for prostate biopsy.Recent FindingsStudies have suggested no difference in prostate cancer (PCa) detection rate between TP-bx and transrectal biopsy (TR-bx) but have suggested potentially increased detection of anterior prostate tumors. Advances in anesthetic technique have obviated the need for sedation thus allowing TP-bx to become an office-based procedure, which in turn can decrease the overall cost of TP-bx. Furthermore, given the low rate of infectious c...
