Disaster Preparedness: Meeting the Needs of the Pediatric Population
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe purpose of this review is to determine how to make the most efficient use of pediatric care resources during a disaster in the hope of minimizing the potential impact of a disaster on the pediatric population.Recent FindingsChildren are known to be especially vulnerable to a disaster because of physiologic, psychologic, and developmental differences from adults. This is further complicated by the fact that most planners do not account for these differences when managing an event.SummaryDisaster response involves coordinating resources on many levels, from what is available to care for children ...

Early Prevention and Treatment Interventions for Childhood Obesity
AbstractPurpose of ReviewChildhood obesity is a challenge that pediatric providers face daily in the clinical setting. As a multifactorial chronic illness, obesity is complex, with numerous possible prevention, and treatment strategies. Clinical interventions in the primary care setting address factors such as promoting healthy behaviors from the beginning of life, increasing parental understanding of weight status and its relationship to health, dietary behaviors, screen time, and physical activity. These behaviors can be addressed through counseling and intervention tools, such as motivational interviewing. These interve...
