“Incitement of insurrection”: Criminogenic antecedents and potential policy responses
AbstractOn January 6th, 2021, a mob of more than 2,000 Trump supporters stormed the Capital —at his urging—in an effort to halt counting of electoral college votes from the 2020 Presidential Election. Vandalism, injury, and loss of life ensued. Although the actions of Trump and the insurrectionists were alarming, the structural factors that gave rise to this offense are arguably even m ore troubling. In this paper, we outline three “criminogenic antecedents” that provided individual actors an opportunity to incite insurrection: (1) a lack of clarity and consensus in conceptualizations of crime, which has resulted i...

The influence and role of cryptoculture on target congruence in cryptocurrency investment behavior: a theoretical model
AbstractThe unprecedented interest in cryptocurrency-related investments over the past five years has gone from a relatively unknown speculative investment to a mainstream practice and hobby. Novice investors looking for financial gains are now able to buy, sell, and trade cryptocurrency due to social media, smartphone applications, and online forums —all of which disseminate information and build trust in collaborative investment strategies. While many investors have used these platforms for financial gain, others have been the target and victim of relentless scams and forms of fraud. In this paper we argue that despite...

Crime, pandemic and social mobility: Empirical evidence from T ürkiye
This study's retrospective approach was created to examine the appearance of crime rates in T ürkiye. The main problem of the research is to reveal the relationship between crime, pandemic, and social mobility in Türkiye. For this purpose, it aimed to test the propositions based on a dual approach. First, patterns in crime rates were discovered. The data set regarding the most common crime types between 2018 and 2022, including pre-pandemic crime rates, was used. Following the (DNM) Bible? A crime script analysis of darknet drug vending
AbstractDarknet drug vending appears to be a multifaceted crime. Vendors use encrypted technologies to anonymously access cryptomarkets, engage buyers with effective advertising techniques, and employ stealth methods to send packages to buyers. What remains unclear is how these different methods come together in a single criminal process. This research addresses this gap by conducting a crime script analysis using 25 darknet drug vending ‘how-to’ guides. The developed crime script is then applied to 50 vendor arrest cases to test its application in practise. The results show that darknet drug vendors display a high deg...

Words matter: judges ’ value judgments in sentence pronouncements remarks
This study examines judges ’ value judgments on their remarks during sentence pronouncements. Astronomical withdrawals: a green criminological examination of extreme energy mining on extraterrestrial objects
AbstractMining for natural resources on-Earth is commonplace and dates back over a hundred years at an industrial scale. Technological advances in outer space exploration are enabling the mining of extraterrestrial resources to transition from mere science fiction, to a serious possibility. In recent decades, several new start-up companies have arisen with the sole intention of exploiting resources that exist in outer space, such as on Earth ’s moon, asteroids, meteorites, planets, and various planetary satellites, such as the moons of Mars - Phobos and Diemos. However, despite the increased investment and interest in sp...

Shadow state structures and the threat to anti-corruption enforcement: evidence from Uzbekistan ’s telecommunications bribery scandal
This article develops analytical categories for deconstructing political secrecy structures and pinpointing the threat they pose to anti-corruption enforcement. These structures and threats are then empirically explored through an investigative case study. The case study plots how shadow poli tical space in Uzbekistan and the simulacra of impartial public administration, was utilised by a kleptocratic syndicate to conceal an international bribery scheme, and then weaponised by the conspirators to successfully frustrate enforcement efforts in Europe. Drawing on key lessons from the case s tudy, proposals are made for how th...

Private and public co-operation in preventing and addressing corporate crime: the case of labour trafficking in the Finnish construction industry

A consequence of these processes has been a growing interest in how public and private sector organisations co-operate to address key challenges, including accountability for alleged exploitation. The purpose of this article is to examine these public-private sector dynamics in the Finnish construction industry, with a particular emphasis on how stakeholders respond to challenges associated with human trafficking, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and the ‘grey economy’. The core argument devel...

‘It could have been us’. Peer responses to money-laundering violations in the Dutch banking industry
AbstractMuch literature has focused on societal responses to corporate scandals, either by authorities or the public. However, there is little research on responses to corporate deviance by peers (corporations in the same industry). As corporations face aZeitgeist characterised by increased attention to, and disapproval of, corporate deviance, they are compelled to respond to the external ‘labelling’ of their behaviour, as well as that of their peers. In this context of increasing public scrutiny, this article explores how (employees at) corporations respond to deviant peer behaviour. To examine this question, the case...
