Neurologic Complications of Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy enhances a patient's own immune system to fight against malignancy and has become increasingly popular during the last decade. Tumor cells can escape destruction by the patient's immune system by overexpression of immunosuppressive molecules such as cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen-4 (CTLA-4), programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) receptor, and its ligand PD-L1. Immunotherapy agents target these inhibitors and basically reactivate the cytotoxic lymphocytes to destroy the tumor cells. Immunotherapy agents currently are FDA-approved for advanced malignancies including melanoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, head and neck...

Imaging Pseudotumors of the Shoulder
Normal variants and benign pseudotumors are common findings on imaging throughout the body. Pseudotumors of the shoulder are common discoveries on routine and emergent shoulder imaging examinations that can create diagnostic conundrums for the radiologist (Table 1). As the volume of medical imaging continues to increase, knowledge of these findings will be essential for accurate diagnosis. Misdiagnosis of a pseudotumor may lead to patient anxiety, unnecessary procedures, surgery, or other medical treatment. (Source: Contemporary Diagnostic Radiology)

The Swollen Parotid Gland
Several systemic diseases and local inflammatory processes can cause diffuse enlargement of the parotid gland. Clinical information regarding the patient's age, localization (including laterality), duration, clinical course of the disease, and presence of associated symptoms can aid in determining the diagnosis. CT and MRI features that help narrow the differential diagnosis include the appearance of the gland (homogeneous, single, or multiple masses); inflammatory changes in, or adjacent to, the parotid gland; pattern of disease spread to adjacent spaces; and the presence of lymphadenopathy. In some cases, imaging is used...

Acute Small Bowel Pathology: Spectrum of Nonneoplastic Diseases on CT

Acute Small Bowel Pathology: Spectrum of Nonneoplastic Diseases on CT
Acute abdomen with clinical suspicion of small bowel pathology is a common indication for CT imaging. Acute processes may result from a variety of entities, including infectious, noninfectious inflammatory, neoplastic, mechanical, iatrogenic, and vascular causes. However, CT imaging features of acute small bowel diseases often can overlap. Therefore, combining clinical history, laboratory data, and current and previous imaging features is key to accurate diagnosis. Familiarity with the various causes of acute small bowel pathology will allow the radiologist to help guide clinical management of patients. (Source: Contempora...

Bone Lesions of the Hand and Wrist: Systematic Approach to Imaging Evaluation
Hand and wrist bone lesions comprise a special subset of masses. When evaluating these lesions, relative tumor incidence always should be considered. For bone lesions occurring throughout the body, the incidence of primary bone tumors is much lower than that of nonneoplastic bone diseases, metastatic diseases, and hematolymphoid malignancies.1 In the hand, benign bone lesions greatly outnumber malignant lesions, as highlighted in a published case series on hand and foot bone lesions.1 Of 52 bone lesions of the hands and feet evaluated with histopathology, the relative incidence was pseudotumors (38%), benign primary tumors...

Soft Tissue Masses of the Hand and Wrist: Systematic Approach to Imaging Evaluation
Hand and wrist soft tissue masses comprise a special subset of soft tissue masses. Lesion prevalence always should be considered. The World Health Organization tumor database reveals soft tissue masses of the hand and wrist are much more common than osseous lesions. In clinical practice, pseudotumors are much more common than neoplasms. Benign tumors of soft tissue are much more common than malignant tumors, with an annual incidence of benign tumors of up to 3000 per million population.1 Malignant sarcomas are extremely rare (50 cases per million per year).1 Understanding available imaging modalities and imaging characteri...
