Dementia Simulation Impact on Empathy of Nursing and Physical Therapy Students: A Quantitative Study
In 2019, there were 54.1 million Americans 65 years or older, with a projected increase to 80.8 million Americans over 65 years by the year 2040 (Administration  for Community Living, 2021). The Aging, Demographics, and Memory Study (ADAMs) estimates that 11% of people 65 years and older are living with a dementia (Hudomiet, Hurd,& Rohwedder, 2018). Dementia is an umbrella term for a cluster of symptoms resulting in difficulties with memory, language, problem-solving, and other cognitive skills (Alzheimer ’s, Association, 2023). Effectiveness of Debriefing for Meaningful Learning (DML) Combined with Empathy Map on Prelicensure Nursing Students ’ Competency: A Quasi-Experimental Study
Health care is a highly stressful clinical environment with rapidly changing and unpredictable issues. Health care workers must have sound clinical reasoning skills (Campo  et al., 2018) and empathy (Hunt, Denieffe,& Gooney, 2019). The clinical learning environment significantly develops nursing students' professional competence (Pitk änen et al., 2018). Debriefing is defined as "facilitated or guided reflection in the cycle of experiential learning" (Fanning& Gaba,  2007). Empirical evidence validates the importance of reflective debriefing discussions in clinical learning (Dreifuerst, 2011; ; Knobel, Overheu, Gr...

Upcoming Special Issue: Interdisciplinary Education and Research in Healthcare Simulation
In the ever-evolving field of healthcare simulation, many are asking what can be done to further advance the science of simulation. While there have been new modalities such as extended reality technologies and artificial intelligence, and unique uses of simulation in classroom settings, I believe that simulationists are often overlooking interdisciplinary simulation as a powerful tool in simulation design, implementation, and research. Within the realm of health care simulation, the convergence of various disciplines holds immense value, unlocking new frontiers in education, training, and patient safety. (Source: Clinical...

Nursing Students ’ Acceptance of an Online Computer-based Simulation System Utilizing the Technology Acceptance Model
With advances in technology and the recent pandemic of COVID-19, online education has proliferated in nursing schools (Dewart, Corcoran, Thirsk,& Petrovic, 2020; Niki et  al., 2020). Online computer-based simulation education in nursing schools has also increased (Cant& Cooper, 2014, 2015; Harder, 2010). However, acceptance of these technological systems used in nursing education is still scarce and not fully understood. Meanwhile, the nursing profession is at a crossroads due to the shortages in number of faculty, decreased clinical sites for learning, an increase influx of students ’ applying to programs and the need ...

Development and Evaluation of a Wearable Simulator System
The use of peer physical examination (PPE) has been a long-standing tradition in clinical education across the health sciences. The use of peers as surrogate patients for teaching and learning physical examinations (PE) skills has been regarded as practical and cost effective, yet this approach is more aligned with convenience of a readily available sample of students, rather than scientifically grounded in best practices of teaching and learning. The limitations of this approach in teaching and learning physical assessment of abnormal signs of health problems are well-known, particularly ethical concerns related to studen...

A Comparison of Nurses ’ Situation Awareness and Eye-Tracking Data in Precardiac Arrest Simulations
In 2020, the incidence of adult in-hospital cardiac arrest in the United States was 17.16 per 1,000 admissions, and 22.4% of patients survived to discharge (Tsao  et al., 2022). Early recognition of cardiac arrest depends on proper assessment and surveillance of patients, including monitoring for early signs and symptoms of deterioration, such as arrhythmias or abnormal vital signs (Tsao et al., 2022). Nurses are at the forefront of detecting these signs or the cardiac arrest itself, activating the emergency response, and initiating cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR; Team, Bloomer,& Redley, 2023). Implementation and Evaluation of a Virtual Reality-Based Cognitive Assessment and Rehabilitation Simulation Course in Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Pre-Post Study
Ageing has become the most urgent health problem in the world, and the ageing population faces manychallenges, one of which is cognitive impairment (Fabr ício, Chagas,& Diniz, 2020; Panza  et al., 2015). Cognitive impairment is a deficit in one or more key brain functions, such as memory, learning, concentration, and decision making (Drew, Weiner,& Sarnak, 2019). For patients with cognitive impairment, the specific cognitive domain that is impaired needs to be determined. Additionally, cognitive impairment can range from mild to severe, with severe impairment that impairs daily living and independence typically referr...

Gender Affirming Postop Care Simulation for Prelicensure Nursing Students: A Pilot Project
Approximately 1.4 million adults in the United States (U.S.) identify as transgender (Williams  Institute 2016).Transgender and nonbinary individuals, also called gender-diverse, are integral and valued members of the community yet experience significant health disparities (Radix, 2020). Such disparities are linked to stigma and discrimination, perpetuated by inadequate healthcare provider training in this population's unique needs (ODPHP, 2020). The U.S. Transgender Survey found over one-third of transgender people reported negative experiences with a healthcare provider; 23% reported avoidance of the healthcare system...

Excellence via Strategic Experiential Learning (ExSEL): A Continuous Improvement Project for Developing Clinical Reasoning and Management
A healthcare provider is a licensed independent professional legally permitted to evaluate and manage a patient's health within their scope of practice and regulatory organizations (Patel& Sharma,  2022). The provider's leading role is to make clinical decisions (Tiffen, Corbridge,& Slimmer, 2014) via clinical reasoning and management (Tay,  Ryan,& Ryan, 2016). However, teaching and evaluating clinical reasoning and management to student providers is challenging (Gay,  Bartlett,& McKinley, 2013). (Source: Clinical Simulation in Nursing)

High Fidelity Simulation Modalities in Preregistration Nurse Education Programs: A Scoping Review
Simulation finds its theoretical underpinning in Kolb's  (1984) theory of experiential learning and continues to evolve to reflect societal changes and the growing scope of nursing, and to narrow the theory to practice gap (Fawaz& Hamdan-Mansour,  2016). In Australia, simulation is defined by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) as “learning experiences that strengthen, mimic, or replace real life situations” (ANMAC, 2019). However, regardless of fidelity, simulation is not currently permitted to replace c linical placement for those students currently actively participating in an acade...
