Gender Affirming Postop Care Simulation for Prelicensure Nursing Students: A Pilot Project

Approximately 1.4 million adults in the United States (U.S.) identify as transgender (Williams  Institute 2016).Transgender and nonbinary individuals, also called gender-diverse, are integral and valued members of the community yet experience significant health disparities (Radix, 2020). Such disparities are linked to stigma and discrimination, perpetuated by inadequate healthcare provider training in this population's unique needs (ODPHP, 2020). The U.S. Transgender Survey found over one-third of transgender people reported negative experiences with a healthcare provider; 23% reported avoidance of the healthcare system altogether for fear of being misgendered or treated poorly (Jame s et al., 2016).
