Safety and Impact on Training of the Influenza Vaccines in Elite Athletes Participating in the Rio 2016 Olympics
Conclusions: Athletes tolerated influenza immunization well. If they are going to travel to the other hemisphere during the influenza season, the use of the second influenza vaccine should be advised. Athletes should anticipate modification of trainings for 2 days after vaccination. (Source: Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine)

Feasibility of a Novel Strategy for Cardiovascular Screening During the Preparticipation Physical Examination
Objective: To determine the feasibility of simultaneously conducting history and physical (H&P), limb-lead electrocardiogram (ECG), and preparticipation echocardiography by frontline providers (PEFP) at one screening station. Methods: This cross-sectional study compares limb-lead versus 12-lead ECG as part of a preparticipation physical examination (PPE) including H&P and PEFP conducted in year 1 and year 2 on 2 cohorts (n = 36, n = 53, respectively) of college athletes at one institution. Year 1 screening was conducted at 3 stations, one station per screening component. Time to complete each station was recorde...

Cardiovascular Screening of Elite Athletes by Sporting Organizations in Australia: A Survey of Chief Medical Officers
Conclusions: Most sports have a screening policy, with reasonable uniformity of components. All included H&P, and almost all included ECG. Only one sport included an echocardiogram and stress test as a standard (international players only). Promoting the latest ECG interpretation criteria may reduce false-positives and cost. Future work should explore cardiac emergency plans, screening infrastructure, cost, and long-term follow-up. (Source: Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine)

Atrial Fibrillation Induced From Commotio Cordis
Conclusions: Our case illustrates an unusual example of atrial fibrillation induced by commotio cordis (AFCC). Although less acutely life threatening and much less frequently described than ventricular fibrillation induced by commotio cordis, AFCC should be considered in the differential after blunt chest wall trauma. Currently, there are little data regarding management of patients with AFCC. (Source: Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine)

A Case of Medial Tibial Crest Friction Syndrome: A Rare Cause of Medial Knee Pain
We present a case of medial knee pain secondary to medial tibial crest friction syndrome (MTCFS) in a 22-year-old male training for a sprint triathlon after rapidly increasing his training program. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed bone marrow and soft-tissue edema about the MTC deep to the MCL consistent with MTCFS. The patient failed a period of relative rest and activity modification, but improved with corticosteroid injection deep to the MCL in the location of his symptoms. This case highlights a potential management option for MTCFS, a disorder previously described only in radiologic literature. (Source: Clinical Jo...

Vanishing White Matter Disease Diagnosis After Athletic Concussion in an Adolescent Male Patient
We report the recognition of a diagnosis of leukoencephalopathy with vanishing white matter, also known as vanishing white matter disease in an adolescent male patient after a sports-related concussion. The patient's atypical symptoms after the concussion led to imaging and subsequent neurological consultation. The objective of this clinical case is to highlight the importance of considering imaging in patients who present with atypical symptoms that may be present after a concussion and to raise awareness of this rare disorder which can present after head trauma. Incidence and Prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi Antibodies in Male Professional Football Players
Conclusions: Seroprevalence and incidence of B. burgdorferi among healthy male professional football players are low. Therefore, infections with B. burgdorferi have to be regarded a rare differential diagnosis in professional football in Central Europe. The low confirmation rate of positive screening assays points to an unspecific immune activation. (Source: Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine)

Risk Factors for Vestibular and Oculomotor Outcomes After Sport-Related Concussion
Conclusions: Female sex, on-field dizziness, fogginess, and PTM symptoms were predictive of experiencing vestibular–oculomotor symptoms/impairment after SRC. (Source: Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine)

Preseason Vestibular Ocular Motor Screening in Children and Adolescents
Objectives: The primary purpose of this study was to examine vestibular/ocular motor screening (VOMS) test performance in a sample of healthy youth ice hockey players. A particular focus was to investigate the potential effects of age and pre-existing health conditions, including concussion history, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disability (LD), headaches/migraines, and depression/anxiety on preseason baseline VOMS performance, including the near point of convergence (NPC) distance. Design: Cross-sectional cohort. Setting: Outpatient physiotherapy clinic. Participants: T...

American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Sports Ultrasound Curriculum for Sports Medicine Fellowships
Abstract: Sports ultrasound is commonly used by sports medicine physicians to enhance diagnostic and procedural accuracy. This expert consensus statement serves as an update to the 2015 American Medical Society for Sports Medicine recommended sports ultrasound curriculum for sports medicine fellowships. Although written in the context of the American sports medicine fellowship training model, we present a stepwise progression in both diagnostic and interventional sports ultrasound that may be applicable to the broader sports medicine community. The curriculum is divided into 12 units with each unit including didactic i...

A Comparison of Quadriceps Tendon Autograft With Bone-Patellar Tendon-Bone Autograft and Hamstring Tendon Autograft for Primary Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Systematic Review and Quantitative Synthesis
Objective: There is growing enthusiasm for the increased use of quadriceps tendon (QT) autograft for primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). The purpose of this analysis was to synthesize and quantitatively assess the available evidence comparing QT autograft with hamstring tendon (HT) and bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) autografts, regarding functional outcomes, knee stability, anterior knee pain, and revision rates. Data Sources: A search in MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for eligible studies up to May 2018 was conducted. Two reviewers selecte...

Comparison of the Stanford ECG Left Atrial Criteria With the International ECG Criteria for Sports Screening
Conclusions: The Stanford evidence-based criterion for ECG-LAA incorporating V2 and replacing “or” for “and” regarding P wave duration increased the yield of abnormal classification for P waves. Future follow-up studies are needed to confirm that this new criterion should be included in future ECG screening consensus documents. (Source: Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine)

Male and Female Adolescent Athletes' Readiness to Return to Sport After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury and Reconstruction
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine whether readiness to return to sport (RTS) differed between adolescent male and female athletes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Design: Longitudinal, prospective cohort. Setting: Outpatient office associated with tertiary-care hospital. Patients: A total of 93 adolescent athletes, 17 years of age and younger, who underwent ACLR surgery with a hamstring autograft were included. Independent Variables: Male and female athletes. Main Outcome Measures: Anterior cruciate ligament–return to sport after injury (ACL-...

Effect of Remnant Tissues on Outcomes of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction at Follow-up Arthroscopy
Conclusions: The presence of ACL remnant tissues did not have a significant effect on outcomes 1 year after reconstruction. However, there was a trend that lower percentage of patients with remnant-preserving ALCR had abnormal arthroscopic findings that lead to a surgical treatment at follow-up arthroscopy 1 year after initial reconstruction. The presence of remnant tissues did not have a significant effect on retear rate. (Source: Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine)
