Cancer clinical trials in the Philippines
Abstract In this Commentary, we discuss disparities in resources for and access to cancer trials from the perspective of the Philippines, a lower-middle-income country in Southeast Asia, where cancer is the fourth leading cause of death. Geographic disparities play out such that academic institutions and clinical trials are centralized in the island of Luzon, particularly in the capital, Manila. These disparities are compounded by the lack of comprehensive cancer patient and clinical trial registries in the Philippines. Additionally, sociocultural considerations influence clinical trial implementation. Providers must consi...

Building implementation science capacity among practitioners of cancer control: development of a pilot training curriculum
ConclusionIn order to scale practice-based evidence, practitioners will need to be engaged. This engagement is optimized when practitioners are trained to collaborate on implementation research. The CCISBC is a feasible program to develop capacity among practitioners in comprehensive cancer control in order to optimize EBIs tailored to context. (Source: Cancer Causes and Control)

Outdoor light at night and risk of liver cancer in the NIH-AARP diet and health study
ConclusionNo association between outdoor LAN and risk of liver cancer or HCC may in part be due to limitations in LAN assessment. More studies on the relationship between light intensity, duration, timing, and wavelength and liver cancer are warranted. (Source: Cancer Causes and Control)

The relationship between prior psychiatric diagnosis and brain cancer diagnosis in the U.S. military health system
ConclusionOur findings suggest an association between diagnosed psychiatric illnesses and subsequent brain cancer diagnosis, which may not be solely explained by detection bias. Psychiatric illness might be a sign for early detection of brain cancer beyond the potential effects of detection bias. (Source: Cancer Causes and Control)

Patient, provider, and nurse preferences of patient reported outcomes (PRO) and side effect management during cancer treatment of underrepresented racial and ethnic minority groups, rural and economically disadvantaged patients: a mixed methods study
ConclusionIn a non-White, rural and low-income patient population, 87.8% of patients reported owning a cell phone. Although all agreed side effect management was a prominent issue, expectations between patients and PN differed substantially. Qualitative data echoed the above and providing concrete suggestions to inform development of a PRO program and side effect mitigation strategies among a diverse patient population. Development and psychometric properties of a brief generic cancer knowledge scale for patients (BCKS-10)
ConclusionOverall, the findings show that the BCKS-10 is a suitable tool to briefly assess cancer knowledge among patients independent of cancer site. However, further surveys have to be conducted to validate the psychometric properties and enhance the BCKS-10. (Source: Cancer Causes and Control)

Underlying mechanisms of change in cancer prevalence in older U.S. adults: contributions of incidence, survival, and ascertainment at early stages
ConclusionWhile decelerating or decreasing prevalence of many cancers were due to a beneficial combination of decreasing incidence and increasing survival, there are cancers for which decelerating prevalence is due to lack of improvement in their stage-specific survival and/or increasing frequency of diagnosis at advanced stages. Overall, if the observed trends persist, it is likely that the burden associated with cancer prevalence in older U.S. adults will be lower  comparing to projections based on constant increasing prevalence have previously estimated. Accuracy of tumor registry versus pharmacy dispensings for breast cancer adjuvant endocrine therapy
ConclusionPharmacy dispensings enable more complete endocrine therapy capture, particularly in women with more advanced tumors or who receive chemotherapy. We determined woman, tumor, and treatment characteristics that contribute to underascertainment of endocrine therapy use in tumor registries. (Source: Cancer Causes and Control)

Cancer disparities in the context of rurality: risk factors and screening across various U.S. rural classification codes
ConclusionsRural cancer disparities persist across multiple rural –urban classification codes, with marked variation in cancer risk factors and screening evident within rural regions. Focusing only on a rural–urban dichotomy may not sufficiently capture subpopulations of rural residents at greater risk for cancer and cancer-related mortality. (Source: Cancer Causes and Control)

Anti-M üllerian hormone levels and breast cancer risk in the study of women’s health across the nation
ConclusionOur results did not suggest a significant association between AMH and breast cancer risk; however, estimates were consistent with prior studies that reported positive associations. (Source: Cancer Causes and Control)

Risk of clear-cell adenocarcinoma of the vagina and cervix among US women with potential exposure to diethylstilbestrol in utero
ConclusionsResults are consistent with prior research and suggest an elevated risk of CCA in midlife and at older ages among women exposed in utero to DES. These results highlight unresolved issues regarding cancer risk among aging DES daughters and appropriate screening guidance. The examination of population-based cancer surveillance data may be a useful tool for monitoring trends in the incidence of other rare cancers over time among specific birth cohorts. Proceedings of the fifth international Molecular Pathological Epidemiology (MPE) meeting
AbstractCancer heterogeneities hold the key to a deeper understanding of cancer etiology and progression and the discovery of more precise cancer therapy. Modern pathological and molecular technologies offer a powerful set of tools to profile tumor heterogeneities at multiple levels in large patient populations, from DNA to RNA, protein and epigenetics, and from tumor tissues to tumor microenvironment and liquid biopsy. When coupled with well-validated epidemiologic methodology and well-characterized epidemiologic resources, the rich tumor pathological and molecular tumor information provide new research opportunities at a...

Does testosterone mediate the relationship between vitamin D and prostate cancer progression? A systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionThere is some evidence that vitamin D increases levels of total and free testosterone, although the effect of testosterone levels within the normal range on prostate cancer progression is unclear. The role of testosterone as a mechanism between vitamin D and prostate cancer progression remains inconclusive. (Source: Cancer Causes and Control)

Substituting bouts of sedentary behavior with physical activity: adopting positive lifestyle choices in people with a history of cancer
ConclusionFor people with a history of cancer, adopting small but positive changes in lifestyle behaviors could help reduce WC and potentially offset negative health-related outcomes associated with higher WC. Further research is required to examine whether such an intervention may be acceptable and manageable among this population. (Source: Cancer Causes and Control)

Race reporting and disparities regarding clinical trials in bladder cancer: a systematic review
ConclusionRace is poorly studied in bladder cancer clinical trials. Trial cohorts may not reflect multicultural populations. The potential association between race and efficacy, safety or tolerability of the tested interventions is unknown. Given the up to twofold increase in bladder cancer-specific death among African-Americans, further research is needed to address the impact of race in clinical trials, while encompassing socioeconomic factors and disease risk factor exposures.
