Male breast cancer: No evidence for mosaic BRCA1 promoter methylation involvement
Breast. 2023 Dec 10;73:103620. doi: 10.1016/j.breast.2023.103620. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBreast cancers (BC) are rare in men and are often caused by constitutional predisposing factors. In women, mosaic BRCA1 promoter methylations (MBPM) are frequent events, detected in 4-8% of healthy subjects. This constitutional epimutation increases risk of early-onset and triple-negative BC. However, the role of MBPM in male BC predisposition has never been assessed. We screened 40 blood samples from men affected by BC, and performed extensive tumour analysis on MBPM-positive patients. We detected two patients carrying MBPM. Su...

Digital breast tomosynthesis versus X-ray of the breast specimen for intraoperative margin assessment: A randomized trial
CONCLUSIONS: No difference was found in the number of re-operations or in diagnostic accuracy to predict histopathological margin status between DBT and X-ray groups. DCIS outside the tumor showed the highest risk of re-operation. Intraoperative methods with improved visualization of DCIS are needed to obtain tumor free margins in BCS.PMID:38064928 | DOI:10.1016/j.breast.2023.103616 (Source: Breast)

Clinical implications of incorporating genetic and non-genetic risk factors in CanRisk-based breast cancer risk prediction
Breast. 2023 Nov 29;73:103615. doi: 10.1016/j.breast.2023.103615. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) risk prediction models consider cancer family history (FH) and germline pathogenic variants (PVs) in risk genes. It remains elusive to what extent complementation with polygenic risk score (PRS) and non-genetic risk factor (NGRFs) data affects individual intensified breast surveillance (IBS) recommendations according to European guidelines.METHODS: For 425 cancer-free women with cancer FH (mean age 40·6 years, range 21-74), recruited in France, Germany and the Netherlands, germline PV status, NGRF...

Association of clinicopathologic variables and patient preference with the choice of surgical treatment for early-stage breast cancer: A registry-based study
CONCLUSION: Choice of surgery is strongly associated with key prognostic factors among women undergoing BCS with RT compared to mastectomy. Failure to control for all relevant confounders may bias results in outcome studies in favour of BCS.PMID:38056168 | DOI:10.1016/j.breast.2023.103614 (Source: Breast)

Development and evaluation of a decision aid for women eligible for organized breast cancer screening according to international standards: A multi-method study
CONCLUSIONS: This decision aid complies with IPDASi standards and could help women eligible for breast screening in France make a shared decision with a specialized healthcare professional about whether or not to participate in organized breast screening.PMID:38056169 | DOI:10.1016/j.breast.2023.103613 (Source: Breast)
