Breast-conserving surgery is not associated with increased local recurrence in patients with early-stage node-negative triple-negative breast cancer treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy
CONCLUSIONS: In this retrospective analysis of patients with early stage node-negative TNBC treated with NACT, BCS was not associated with an increased risk of LRR but with superior DFS and OS.PMID:38422624 | DOI:10.1016/j.breast.2024.103701 (Source: Breast)

2023  Year in review: Early breast cancer
Breast. 2024 Feb 24;74:103700. doi: 10.1016/j.breast.2024.103700. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe results of several studies aiming to tailor early breast cancer treatment to individual risk were released in 2023. Axillary lymph node dissections and radiotherapy may be safely omitted in carefully selected patients. Sustained benefit from adjuvant CDK4/6 inhibitors was observed in high-risk hormone receptor-positive disease and the addition of immunotherapy to neoadjuvant chemotherapy improved pathological response. Continued benefit from perioperative pembrolizumab was reported in patients with triple negative breast can...

Effectiveness of hybrid digital breast tomosynthesis/digital mammography compared to digital mammography in women presenting for routine screening at Maroondah BreastScreen: Study protocol for a co-designed, non-randomised prospective trial
This study is a prospective trial embedded in population-based Australian screening services (Maroondah BreastScreen, Eastern Health, Victoria) comparing hybrid screening comprising DBT (mediolateral oblique view) and digital mammography (cranio-caudal view) with standard mammography screening in a concurrent group attending another screening site. All eligible women aged ≥40 years attending the Maroondah service for routine screening will be enrolled (unless they do not provide verbal consent and opt-out of hybrid screening; are unable to provide consent; or where a 'pushback' image on hybrid DBT cannot be obtained). Ea...

Stakeholders' experiences and perceptions of male breast cancer:A qualitative evidence synthesis
CONCLUSIONS: The gender stigma that exists at the patient, healthcare system, and family-society levels largely influences the experiences of the male breast cancer stakeholder population. To address gender inequalities in breast cancer care, healthcare organizations and society at large should remain equally attentive to the needs of male and female breast cancer patients. These needs include reducing healthcare and social stigma, providing gender-specific information and emotional support, and access to support groups.PMID:38417232 | DOI:10.1016/j.breast.2024.103694 (Source: Breast)

The efficacy of sensory nerve coaptation in DIEP flap breast reconstruction - Preliminary results of a double-blind randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: These preliminary results indicate superior sensibility and recovery of protective sensation in innervated compared with non-innervated DIEP flaps. Although the results of the completed trial must be awaited to establish the full clinical impact, including highly anticipated quality of life outcomes, we encourage continuation of scientific and clinical efforts in this promising technique.PMID:38401421 | DOI:10.1016/j.breast.2024.103691 (Source: Breast)
