Bayesian evidence synthesis as a flexible alternative to meta-analysis: A simulation study and empirical demonstration
In this study, we introduce Bayesian evidence synthesis and show through simulations when this method diverges from what would be expected in a meta-analysis to help researchers correctly interpret the synthesis results. As an empirical demonstration, we also apply Bayesian evidence synthesis to a published meta-analysis on statistical learning in people with and without developmental language disorder. We highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed method and offer suggestions for future research.PMID:38532062 | DOI:10.3758/s13428-024-02350-2 (Source: Behavior Research Methods)

Check your outliers ! An introduction to identifying statistical outliers in R with easystats
Behav Res Methods. 2024 Mar 25. doi: 10.3758/s13428-024-02356-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBeyond the challenge of keeping up to date with current best practices regarding the diagnosis and treatment of outliers, an additional difficulty arises concerning the mathematical implementation of the recommended methods. Here, we provide an overview of current recommendations and best practices and demonstrate how they can easily and conveniently be implemented in the R statistical computing software, using the {performance} package of the easystats ecosystem. We cover univariate, multivariate, and model-based statistical out...

Attentional biases to signals of negative information: Reliable measurement across three anxiety domains
Behav Res Methods. 2024 Mar 25. doi: 10.3758/s13428-024-02403-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCognitive models propose that individuals with elevated vulnerability to experiencing negative emotion are characterised by biased attentional responding to negative information. Typically, methods of examining these biases have measured attention to pictures of emotional scenes, emotional faces, or rewarding or feared objects. Though these approaches have repeatedly yielded evidence of anxiety-linked biases, their measurement reliability is suggested to be poor. Recent research has shown that attentional responding to cues signa...

Can you tell people's cognitive ability level from their response patterns in questionnaires?
In this study, we examined whether an indirect indicator of general cognitive ability could be developed based on response patterns in questionnaires. We drew on two established phenomena characterizing connections between cognitive ability and people's performance on basic cognitive tasks, and examined whether they apply to questionnaires responses. (1) The worst performance rule (WPR) states that people's worst performance on multiple sequential tasks is more indicative of their cognitive ability than their average or best performance. (2) The task complexity hypothesis (TCH) suggests that relationships between cognitive...

From lab to life: Evaluating the reliability and validity of psychophysiological data from wearable devices in laboratory and ambulatory settings
Behav Res Methods. 2024 Mar 25. doi: 10.3758/s13428-024-02387-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite the increasing popularity of ambulatory assessment, the reliability and validity of psychophysiological signals from wearable devices is unproven in daily life settings. We evaluated the reliability and validity of physiological signals (electrocardiogram, ECG; photoplethysmography, PPG; electrodermal activity, EDA) collected from two wearable devices (Movisens EcgMove4 and Empatica E4) in the lab (N = 67) and daily life (N = 20) among adults aged 18-64 with Mindware as the laboratory gold standard. Results revealed that ...

HBMIRT: A SAS macro for estimating uni- and multidimensional 1- and 2-parameter item response models in small (and large!) samples
Behav Res Methods. 2024 Mar 22. doi: 10.3758/s13428-024-02366-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTItem response theory (IRT) has evolved as a standard psychometric approach in recent years, in particular for test construction based on dichotomous (i.e., true/false) items. Unfortunately, large samples are typically needed for item refinement in unidimensional models and even more so in the multidimensional case. However, Bayesian IRT approaches with hierarchical priors have recently been shown to be promising for estimating even complex models in small samples. Still, it may be challenging for applied researchers to set up suc...
