The Chinese lexicon of deaf readers: A database of character decisions and a comparison between deaf and hearing readers
We present a psycholinguistic study investigating lexical effects on simplified Chinese character recognition by deaf readers. Prior research suggests that deaf readers exhibit efficient orthographic processing and decreased reliance on speech-based phonology in word recognition compared to hearing readers. In this large-scale character decision study (25 participants, each evaluating 2500 real characters and 2500 pseudo-characters), we analyzed various factors influencing character recognition accuracy and speed in deaf readers. Deaf participants demonstrated greater accuracy and faster recognition when characters were mo...

Semantic feature norms: a cross-method and cross-language comparison
In this study, we compare behavioral with corpus-based norms, across Finnish and English, using an all-to-all approach. To complete the set of norms required for this study, we present a new set of Finnish behavioral production norms, containing both abstract and concrete concepts. We found that all the norms provide largely similar information about the relationships of concrete objects and allow item-level mapping across norms sets. This validates the use of the corpus-derived norms which are easier to obtain than behavioral norms, which are labor-intensive to collect, for studies that do not depend on subtle differences...

ChatDashboard:  A Framework to collect, link, and process donated WhatsApp Chat Log Data
Behav Res Methods. 2023 Dec 21. doi: 10.3758/s13428-023-02276-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this paper, we present ChatDashboard, a framework for collecting, linking, and processing donated WhatsApp chat log data. The framework consists of the WhatsR R package for parsing, anonymizing, and preprocessing donated WhatsApp chat logs, the ChatDashboard R Shiny web app for uploading, reviewing, and securely donating WhatsApp chat logs, and DashboardTester, an automated script for testing the correct setup of the framework by simulating participants. With ChatDashboard, researchers can set up their own data collections to ...

Precise localization of corneal reflections in eye images using deep learning trained on synthetic data
We present a deep learning method for accurately localizing the center of a single corneal reflection (CR) in an eye image. Unlike previous approaches, we use a convolutional neural network (CNN) that was trained solely using synthetic data. Using only synthetic data has the benefit of completely sidestepping the time-consuming process of manual annotation that is required for supervised training on real eye images. To systematically evaluate the accuracy of our method, we first tested it on images with synthetic CRs placed on different backgrounds and embedded in varying levels of noise. Second, we tested the method on tw...

Language with vision: A study on grounded word and sentence embeddings
Behav Res Methods. 2023 Dec 19. doi: 10.3758/s13428-023-02294-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGrounding language in vision is an active field of research seeking to construct cognitively plausible word and sentence representations by incorporating perceptual knowledge from vision into text-based representations. Despite many attempts at language grounding, achieving an optimal equilibrium between textual representations of the language and our embodied experiences remains an open field. Some common concerns are the following. Is visual grounding advantageous for abstract words, or is its effectiveness restricted to concre...

Ecologically valid speech collection in behavioral research: The Ghent Semi-spontaneous Speech Paradigm (GSSP)
Behav Res Methods. 2023 Dec 13. doi: 10.3758/s13428-023-02300-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis paper introduces the Ghent Semi-spontaneous Speech Paradigm (GSSP), a new method for collecting unscripted speech data for affective-behavioral research in both experimental and real-world settings through the description of peer-rated pictures with a consistent affective load. The GSSP was designed to meet five criteria: (1) allow flexible speech recording durations, (2) provide a straightforward and non-interfering task, (3) allow for experimental control, (4) favor spontaneous speech for its prosodic richness, and (5) req...
