Open-DPSM: An open-source toolkit for modeling pupil size changes to dynamic visual inputs
Behav Res Methods. 2023 Dec 11. doi: 10.3758/s13428-023-02292-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPupil size change is a widely adopted, sensitive indicator for sensory and cognitive processes. However, the interpretation of these changes is complicated by the influence of multiple low-level effects, such as brightness or contrast changes, posing challenges to applying pupillometry outside of extremely controlled settings. Building on and extending previous models, we here introduce Open Dynamic Pupil Size Modeling (Open-DPSM), an open-source toolkit to model pupil size changes to dynamically changing visual inputs using a co...

Type I error rates and power of two randomization test procedures for the changing criterion design
Behav Res Methods. 2023 Dec 11. doi: 10.3758/s13428-023-02303-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSingle-case experimental design (SCED) data can be analyzed following different approaches. One of the first historically proposed options is randomizations tests, benefiting from the inclusion of randomization in the design: a desirable methodological feature. Randomization tests have become more feasible with the availability of computational resources, and such tests have been proposed for all major types of SCEDs: multiple-baseline, reversal/withdrawal, alternating treatments, and changing criterion designs. The focus of the ...

Road Hazard Stimuli: Annotated naturalistic road videos for studying hazard detection and scene perception
Behav Res Methods. 2023 Dec 11. doi: 10.3758/s13428-023-02299-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDriving requires vision, yet there is little empirical data about how vision and cognition support safe driving. It is difficult to study perception during natural driving because the experimental rigor required would be dangerous and unethical to implement on the road. The driving environment is complex, dynamic, and immensely variable, making it extremely challenging to accurately replicate in simulation. Our proposed solution is to study vision using stimuli which reflect this inherent complexity by using footage of real drivi...

Diversity, equity, and inclusivity in observational ambulatory assessment: Recommendations from two decades of Electronically Activated Recorder (EAR) research
This article presents our resultant recommendations and argues for the incorporation of community-engaged research methods in observational ambulatory assessment designs looking forward. We provide concrete recommendations across each stage typical of an ambient audio sampling study (recruiting and enrolling participants, developing coding systems, training coders, handling multi-linguistic participants, data analysis and interpretation, and dissemination of results) as well as guiding questions that can be used to adapt these recommendations to project-specific constraints and needs.PMID:38066394 | DOI:10.3758/s13428-023-...

Creating web applications for online psychological experiments: A hands-on technical guide including a template
Behav Res Methods. 2023 Dec 5. doi: 10.3758/s13428-023-02302-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe present tutorial provides a technical overview of how to create web applications for online psychological experiments from scratch via the HTML/CSS/JavaScript framework. This approach allows virtually unlimited flexibility in accomplishing anything in an online experiment that a regular computer (or smartphone, etc.) is capable of. Apart from offering a fast introduction for complete beginners, this tutorial may also serve as a helpful guideline for more experienced programmers and researchers. Connected to the tutorial, a spe...

A compressive sensing approach for inferring cognitive representations with reverse correlation
Behav Res Methods. 2023 Dec 4. doi: 10.3758/s13428-023-02281-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUncovering cognitive representations is an elusive goal that is increasingly pursued using the reverse correlation method, wherein human subjects make judgments about ambiguous stimuli. Employing reverse correlation often entails collecting thousands of stimulus-response pairs, which severely limits the breadth of studies that are feasible using the method. Current techniques to improve efficiency bias the outcome. Here we show that this methodological barrier can be diminished using compressive sensing, an advanced signal process...
