Upregulation of miR-499a Targets Beclin1 to Modulate Astrocyte Autophagy and Promote Ischemic Stroke
CONCLUSION: Serum miR-499a in stroke patients may serve as a potential diagnostic indicator. MiR-499a-mediated inhibition of Beclin 1, subsequently leading to suppression of astrocytic autophagy and viability, may represent a pivotal mechanism underlying its promotion of IS.PMID:38514065 (Source: Annals of Clinical and Laboratory Science)

A Rare Autopsy Case of Aggressive Combined Hepatocellular-Cholangiocarcinoma in 59-Year-Old Female
Ann Clin Lab Sci. 2024 Jan;54(1):106-111.ABSTRACTCombined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CC) is a liver tumor with features of both hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). It consists of intermingled malignant biliary and hepatic tissue and thus a distinct entity, rather than two separate coexisting malignancies. A 59-year-old female with a history of hepatitis C and cirrhosis presented with abdominal pain and altered mental status. She developed hematemesis, and despite extensive interventions, she expired one day after her initial presentation. At autopsy, the liver was diffusel...

Large Malignant Testicular/Paratesticular Tumors in Adolescence: Assessment of Gross Tumor Size in a Vulnerable Age Group
CONCLUSION: This adolescent cohort with malignant testicular and paratesticular tumors showed a high proportion (11.8%) of very large (≥10 cm) tumors. Although the reasons are unknown and likely multifactorial, this study suggests that adolescents, particularly the 11-13 year age group, are a vulnerable population.PMID:38514050 (Source: Annals of Clinical and Laboratory Science)

< em > Letter to the Editor: < /em > Comparing the Novel Parameter 'Slope of the Steepest Part of Hemolysis Curve' to Standard Median Corpuscular Fragility for Evaluating Erythrocyte Stability during Prolonged Storage
CONCLUSION: Prolonged storage of whole blood samples leads to an increase in osmotic fragility and alters the shape of the hemolysis curve. These changes suggest that postponing the osmotic fragility test could lead to diagnostic inaccuracies. These findings suggest that slope value is a more accurate parameter for evaluating erythrocyte stability during storage, compared to commonly used Median corpuscular fragility value. Hence, it has potential importance and can be complementary to the laboratory result of the OFT. Therefore, it can be useful to provide these results jointly with the results of the OFT test.PMID:385140...

Idiopathic Thrombocytosis in Alpha Thalassemia Trait Patient
We present here a case of microcytic hypochromic red blood cells and thrombocytosis in an adolescent female that we have monitored for three years. The patient was positive for alpha thalassemia trait; negative for mutation in Janus kinase 2, calreticulin, or myeloproliferative leukemia virus oncogene; and negative for reactive causes of thrombocytosis. Noticeably, a variant in atypical chemokine receptor 1 (ACKR1) (c.-67T>C, rs2814778) was found to be homozygous. Accordingly, the case was diagnosed as idiopathic thrombocytosis, and treatment was given to restore platelet levels to normal. Our findings highlight the pos...
