Discriminatory Capacity of the Physical Domain Versus the Full-Scale Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory With Traumatic Brain Injury Severity in Children
A previous study demonstrated that the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, a health-related quality-of-life instrument consisting of physical and psychosocial domain scores, reliably differentiates between children with varying severities of traumatic brain injuries (N = 729) 3, 12, and 24 mos after injury. However, the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory physical domain score alone may simplify evaluation outcomes in physical rehabilitation and clinical research when comparing different trauma interventions. Therefore, we performed a secondary analysis to evaluate and compare the discriminative capacity of traumatic brai...

Author Diversity on Clinical Practice Guideline Committees
Reports have demonstrated that women overall and women physicians, in particular, are underrepresented as authors of clinical practice guidelines. This analysis used publicly available information to explore the diversity of rehabilitation-related clinical practice guideline authors by gender, race, and ethnicity. Primary analysis identified authors’ gender, race, ethnicity, and visible minority status. Two sets were analyzed: (1) clinical practice guidelines by Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) categorized as “Rehabilitation” or “Pain” (n = 7; VA clinical practice guidelines) and (2) a set (n = 10) published i...

The Effectiveness of Fluoroscopically Guided Genicular Nerve Radiofrequency Ablation for the Treatment of Chronic Knee Pain Due to Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review
The objective was to determine the effectiveness of fluoroscopically guided genicular nerve radiofrequency ablation for painful knee osteoarthritis. Primary outcome measure was improvement in pain after 6 mos. Secondary outcomes included the Oxford Knee Score and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index. Two reviewers independently assessed publications before October 10, 2020. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool and Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation system were used. One hundred ninety-nine publications were screened, and nine were included. Six-month success rates for 50% ...

Standard Psychometric Criteria for Measurements in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine
This article provides an overview of the standard psychometric criteria to consider in measurement selection. The article focuses on the criteria related to the contemporary psychometric approach as it considers the construct, the target population, and the purpose for which measurements are used. Common strategies related to psychometric testing are discussed and applied to critically appraise, as a representative example, one of the most commonly used pain measurements: Brief Pain Inventory. The measurement construct, conceptual framework, target population, purpose, and psychometric properties are highlighted. Observed ...

Interrater Reliability in the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Part II Certification Examination: Impact of a New Assessment Design
Conclusions A high degree of interrater agreement was found using a new, two-examiner format. Comprehensive examiner training is likely the most significant factor for this finding. The two-examiner format improved the overall reliability and validity of the Part II Examination. (Source: American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)

Acute Physiological Effects of Continuous Versus Intermittent Walking During Golf in Individuals With Knee Osteoarthritis: A Pilot Study
Objective The aim of the study was to compare the acute effects of walking the golf course versus using a golf cart during a round of golf on biological markers of joint disease, joint pain, and cardiovascular parameters in individuals with knee osteoarthritis. Methods Participants with knee OA (n = 10) older than 50 yrs were recruited for this crossover designed study in which they completed two 18-hole rounds of golf: (1) walking the course and (2) using a golf cart. Five control participants (n = 5) performed the walking condition only. Step count, heart rate, rating of perceived exertion and pain using the N...

Incidence and Associated Risk Factors for Falls in Older Adults After Elective Total Knee Replacement Surgery: A Prospective Cohort Study
Conclusions Older adults experience a high incidence of falls after elective total knee replacement. Further research that investigates falls prevention after total knee replacement is required. (Source: American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)

A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis on the Effectiveness of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Swallowing Function of Poststroke Patients
Conclusions This meta-analysis showed that transcranial direct current stimulation is likely to be effective for the recovery of dysphagia in poststroke patients, in the acute or chronic phase, and that the effect of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation to unaffected hemispheres is larger. Readmission to an Acute Care Hospital During Inpatient Rehabilitation After Stroke
Objective The aim of the study was to identify causes for readmission to acute care of patients admitted to inpatient rehabilitation facility after stroke. Design The institutional Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation database was used to identify stroke patients who experienced readmission to acute care and an equal number of age-/sex-matched group of patients who successfully completed their inpatient rehabilitation facility stay during 2005–2018. Retrospective chart review was used to extract clinical data. The two study groups were compared using univariate and multivariate analyses. Results ...

Role of Lower Limb Muscle Strength in Knee Osteoarthritis Progression for Patients With Mild and Moderate Knee Osteoarthritis
Conclusions This study shows the relationship between lower limb muscle strength and volumes of cartilage and meniscus for patients with mild and moderate knee osteoarthritis. In addition, our study indicates a biomechanical mechanism of quadricep strength and meniscus-related knee dynamic stability in progression of mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Consultation for Stroke Patients in Acute Care Setting May Be Associated With an Increased Rate of Discharge to the Community From the Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility
Objective The aim of the study was to determine whether stroke patients who receive physical medicine and rehabilitation consultation in acute care setting are more likely to discharge from inpatient rehabilitation facility to a community setting compared with those who do not. Design This was a retrospective analysis of consecutive patients admitted with stroke to inpatient rehabilitation facility between June and October 2018. The primary outcome measure was discharge disposition. Other variables measured included functional independence measures and length of stay. Analysis of baseline covariates was conducte...

Olfactory Changes After Military Deployment Are Associated With Emotional Distress but Not With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury History
Conclusions These findings indicate mild traumatic brain injury is not a risk factor for postacute microsomia among Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and New Dawn military veterans. Higher observed rates of self-reported olfactory disturbance in patients with mild traumatic brain injury may be a function of emotional distress rather than organic brain injury.
