Long-Term Rehabilitation Utilization Pattern Among Stroke Patients Under the National Health Insurance Program
Conclusions Besides personal factors, geographic factors such as urban-rural gaps and number of therapists were significantly associated with the utilization of post-stroke rehabilitation care. Furthermore, the influence of certain factors, such as sex, stroke type, and copayment exemption type, changed over time. (Source: American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)

Influencing Medical Students’ Knowledge and Attitudes Related to Disability: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Purposes The aims of the study were to evaluate and to compare the efficacy of an online and a traditionally delivered undergraduate elective course in improving medical students’ disability-related knowledge and attitudes. Methods A randomized controlled design was implemented. Participants were medical students randomly assigned into summer 8-wk disability and the society (OT100) online course, OT100 traditional course, or wellness and lifestyles (PT100) control. Demographics were collected in addition to participants’ level disability knowledge and attitudes toward people with disability scale scores (1 w...

Personality Predictors of Time to Return to Play After Sports-Related Concussion: Analysis of Survey Data From an Undergraduate Sample
Conclusions Despite a heterogeneous sample, significant relations were found between timing of return to play and sensation seeking, impulsivity, and conscientiousness. Because earlier return to play can heighten the risk of sustaining a new concussion after an initial concussion, it is important to identify characteristics—such as personality traits—that influence individuals’ return-to-play behaviors. Anticoagulant-Related Intramuscular Hematomas in an Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation Population: A Case Series
Anticoagulant-related intramuscular hematomas are uncommon. However, when they do occur, the clinical consequences can be significant. The authors describe nine patients on anticoagulation undergoing rehabilitation who experienced an intramuscular hematoma. In all cases, activity in therapy before the intramuscular hematoma was considered normal therapeutic activity and consistent with activity commonly performed during rehabilitation. The study found that the anticoagulated rehabilitation population is at risk for intramuscular hematomas and poses a diagnostic challenge because many are insensate and, therefore, present a...

Distal Gracilis Tear in an Equestrian
A 61-yr-old female equestrian presented after 2 wks of left medial thigh pain, which developed suddenly while exiting a car. She denied any history of recent trauma or falls. On examination, she was found to have tenderness at the left distal medial thigh with a palpable region of decreased tissue volume at the gracilis myotendinous junction. Point-of-care ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed a high-grade partial thickness tear of the left distal gracilis at the myotendinous junction, as well as pes anserine bursal distention. She received physical therapy and underwent a 1-time ultrasound-guided corticoster...

Now Is the Time: A Primer on How to Be a Disability Education Champion in Your Medical School
One in four noninstitutionalized adults in the United States lives with a disability. People with disabilities have frequent interactions with the medical community and the healthcare system yet experience disparities in access and outcomes. The Association of American Medical Colleges has included disability in its definition of diversity as one of the aspects of patient care that may affect health equity. However, training in the lived experience of disability is not always included in medical education. Physiatrists make excellent disability champions in medical schools, given their training and experience in the care o...

Neuromuscular Ultrasound: Indications in the Electrodiagnostic Laboratory
Accurate assessment of neuromuscular disorders is critical to facilitate timely treatment and achieve the best outcomes. Historically, electrodiagnostic studies have filled this role, but recently, neuromuscular ultrasound is being used in the electrodiagnostic laboratory. This review discusses the uses of neuromuscular ultrasound in the electrodiagnostic laboratory that have strong evidence, emphasizing those that could be adopted in a typical electrodiagnostic laboratory with a reasonable level of equipment and training. The evidence currently supports using neuromuscular ultrasound to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome and...
