Musculoskeletal and Neurological Pain Symptoms Among Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients
Conclusions Pain symptoms are common manifestation of coronavirus disease 2019. Generalized myalgia, headache, and low back pain are the three most common new-onset pain symptoms in hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 patients. Further investigation of pain symptoms and their predictive factors are recommended, which may guide healthcare workers and policymakers to plan in this direction. Use of the Modified Constraint Induced Movement Therapy Protocol to Improve Function of the Predominant Arm on a Patient With Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury
In this case study, an off label modified constraint induced movement therapy protocol was applied in a 28-year male patient with incomplete tetraplegia C5 American Spinal Cord Injury Association D as a facilitator to enhance predominant upper arm function and regain important activities of daily living. The patient was ambulatory for short distances with arm crutches but could not perform important activities of daily living because of the involvement of his right arm, autonomy, and function were impaired. A 10-wk protocol of modified constraint induced movement therapy was performed, with two daily sessions for 30 mins e...

Introductory Resident-Led Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Case-Based Ultrasound Workshop for Medical Students
The core clinical ultrasound milestones for medical students in the United States do not cover the majority of clinical topics pertinent to the specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation. In addition, one of the major barriers to teaching physical medicine and rehabilitation residents ultrasound is a lack of instructors with sufficient experience. A solution to both of these problems is the establishment of a resident-led case-based ultrasound workshop for medical students that introduces them to the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. This novel workshop involved 30 medical students and 9 resident instru...

Moderators of Improvements in Fatigue Impact After a Self-management Intervention in Multiple Sclerosis: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial
Fatigue is one of the most common and disabling symptoms of multiple sclerosis. A recent randomized controlled trial comparing a fatigue self-management program and a general multiple sclerosis education program found that both programs improved fatigue in participants with multiple sclerosis. Participants were randomized to a self-management program (fatigue: take control, n = 109) or a multiple sclerosis education program (multiple sclerosis: take control, n = 109). This secondary analysis of that trial used multilevel moderation analysis to examine moderators of treatment-related effects on fatigue (Modified Fatigue Imp...

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Noninvasive Positive Pressure Ventilatory Support: “Nasal Noninvasive Ventilation” or “Noninvasive Ventilatory Support”?
Many studies suggest a brief statistical benefit on survival and quality of life by using nasal noninvasive ventilation for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other neuromuscular conditions. Indeed, nasal noninvasive ventilation has become synonymous with continuous positive airway pressure and lo-span bilevel positive airway pressure. Nasal noninvasive ventilation, however, may not normalize CO2 levels and continuous positive airway pressure and O2 exacerbate hypercapnia and often lead to CO2 narcosis, intubation, and ultimately tracheostomy or palliative care death. However, a third option can be to offer up...

Rehabilitation After Single-Event Multilevel Surgery for Children and Young Adults With Cerebral Palsy: A Systematic Review
This review sought to describe and analyze published protocols for rehabilitation after single-event multilevel surgery for people with cerebral palsy, to identify their differences and limits, and to introduce a common step-by-step framework for future descriptions and assessments of postoperative rehabilitation protocols. Bicycling and Tricycling Road Race Performance in International Para-Cycling Events Between 2011 and 2019
This study described bicycling (C classes) and tricycling (T classes) performance in the International Cycling Federation road race events between 2011 and 2019. A total of 3243 race results from 33 events were analyzed. Race velocity was calculated for each result. Bicycling and tricycling data were separately modeled using a linear mixed-effects model. Bicycling velocity was statistically different between all adjacent men’s classes (Cohen d = 0.14–0.73) and between the women’s C1 and C2 (d = 1.15) and C3 and C4 (d = 0.48) classes. The absence of statistical differences between some women’s bicycling classes may ...

Pilot and Feasibility Studies in Rehabilitation Research: A Review and Educational Primer for the Physiatrist Researcher
Pilot and feasibility studies are conducted early in the clinical research pathway to evaluate whether a future, definitive study can or should be done and, if so, how. Poor planning and reporting of pilot and feasibility studies can compromise subsequent research efforts. Inappropriate labeling of studies as pilots also compromises education. In this review, first, a systematic survey of the current state of pilot and feasibility studies in rehabilitation research was performed, and second, recommendations were made for improvements to their design and reporting. In a random sample of 100 studies, half (49.5%) were random...

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Is Associated With Increased Dual-Task Cost During Ambulation: A Preliminary Study
Objective The aim of the study was to determine the impact of dual-task conditions on mobility after mild traumatic brain injury. Design Eleven adults with mild traumatic brain injury within 1 wk of injury and 10 age- and sex-matched healthy controls completed gait trials with a single-task condition and three separate dual-task conditions: counting by 1 (low), serial subtraction by 3 (medium), and alternating letters and numbers (high). Dual-task cost was calculated as dual-task cost = ([dual-task performance] – [single-task performance]) / [single-task performance] × 100%. Results Participants with m...

Objective The aim of the study was to identify the effects of combined motor imagery and action observation therapy on vascular cognitive impairment. Design Thirty vascular cognitive impairment patients were randomly assigned into three groups. Cognitive training group was given conventional cognitive training, motor imagery + action observation group was treated with motor imagery and action observation therapy, and mixed therapy group was given conventional cognitive training and motor imagery + action observation therapy, for 8 wks continuously. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale, Rivermead Behavioral Me...
