Deterioration of the Corticobulbar Tract in Older Dysphagic Patients Without Neurologic Diseases
Conclusions A deteriorated corticobulbar tract could be associated with the development of dysphagia in older adults without neurological diseases. Our findings might help establish more appropriate treatment strategies, such as targeted neuromodulation therapies in the future. (Source: American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)

Prevalence and Treatment Characteristics of Spastic Hypertonia on First-Time Admission to Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation
Conclusions Spasticity is a common sequela of upper motor neuron injury for patients admitted to inpatient rehabilitation. Early recognition and management are essential to prevent contractures, minimize pain, and maximize functional recovery. (Source: American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)

Phosphodiesterase 5 Inhibitor Use in Patients Undergoing Decompression Surgery for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
Conclusions Prevalence of lumbar decompression surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis was significantly lower in patients in the treatment group on phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor therapy compared with the control group. Among many potential explanations, the vasodilatory effect of phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor may have contributed to a lower surgical rate. This is the first study to explore this novel association. Future prospective studies are necessary to better define the utility of phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor in lumbar spinal stenosis. (Source: American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)

The Relationship of Aging and Smoking With Rotator Cuff Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
In this study, we synthesized evidence from studies reporting associations for aging and smoking status in relation to rotator cuff disease. Design A systematic review was performed using multiple databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, CINAHL, and Science Direct). Articles that met our eligibility criteria and presented data on the association between aging and/or smoking status and rotator cuff disease were included. We performed meta-analyses and reported cumulative effects using odds ratios and corresponding 95% confidence intervals. Results Of the 212 articles eligible for full-text review, seven studies re...

Predictors of Psychological Distress and Confidence Negotiating Physical and Social Environments Among Mobility Device Users
Conclusions Age is associated with psychosocial outcomes for assistive device users, and those who use walkers may experience increased challenges with depression and negotiating the physical environment. Pending confirmatory research, the findings may have important implications for targeted interventions related to device provision. (Source: American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)

Core Stability Exercises Yield Multiple Benefits for Patients With Chronic Stroke: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Conclusions Core stability exercises on stable and unstable support surfaces are equally beneficial in improving trunk control, core muscle strength, standing weight-bearing symmetry, and balance confidence of ambulatory patients with chronic stroke than the standard physiotherapy. Who Recovers Independent Bowel Management During the First Year After a Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury?: A Case-Control Study
Conclusions Recovering independent bowel management 1 yr after traumatic spinal cord injury was possible in 35% of patients despite impaired bowel functioning during the subacute phase. The total motor score measured 3 mos after injury could be useful for prognosticating potential for bowel functioning recovery because patients with total motor score lower than 42 are unlikely to recover. Hamstring Muscle Cramp Visualized on Bone Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography/Computed Tomography Hybrid Imaging
This report presents the case of an active 50-yr-old man (body mass index = 29) that was recently referred to our nuclear medicine department for bone scintigraphy, for the skeletal staging of a newly diagnosed prostate adenocarcinoma. The scan findings were unremarkable for its oncological indication but revealed extraosseous radiotracer absorption in the medial region of the hamstrings bilaterally. Hybrid scintitomography (single-photon emission computed tomography) with computed tomography indicated that this uptake involved the semitendinosus muscle. On a more meticulous repeat history questioning, he recalled experien...

Development of a Cadaver Laboratory Curriculum for Interventional Spine Procedures for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residents
The objective of this protocol was to share a curriculum using a cadaver laboratory for teaching Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residents interventional spine procedures, which can be an effective and safe medium to train residents. This protocol provides a checklist that can guide the residents while they are in the cadaver laboratory with a focus on some of the most common lumbar procedures. Twelve physical medicine and rehabilitation resident’s confidence in their ability to maneuver the x-ray image intensifier (C-arm), identify spine anatomy under fluoroscopy, and drive the needle improved after the training cu...

EURO-MUSCULUS/USPRM Dynamic Ultrasound Protocols for Shoulder
In this dynamic protocol, ultrasound examination of the shoulder using different maneuvers is described for several/relevant shoulder problems. Scanning videos are coupled with real-time patient examination videos for better understanding. The authors believe that this practical guide prepared by an international consensus of several experts (EURO-MUSCULUS: European Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Study Group and USPRM: Ultrasound Study Group of ISPRM [International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine]) will help musculoskeletal physicians perform a better and uniform/standard approach. Capacity for Hand-as-a-Holder Function of the Spastic Combination Hand: A Proof-of-Concept Study
We call a hemiparetic hand with paralyzed finger extensors and volitional but spastic flexors a “spastic combination hand.” Anecdotally, patients report hand-as-a-holder function with objects like pill bottles, motivating us to formally study spastic combination hand holding capacity using cylinders with different diameters. Nine participants with spastic hemiparesis and spastic combination hand more than 24 mos performed a standardized motor task with 10 cylinder diameters ranging between 1.3 and 9.5 cm and weighing 0.8 and 8.4 oz. Using the unaffected hand, participants attempted to insert a given cylinder into their...
