Reconstructing Severe Lower Extremity Skin Necrosis in a Pediatric Patient
Purpura fulminans can result in significant full-thickness wounds, posing a challenge in the pediatric population, given the paucity of donor sites for reconstruction. The authors present the case of an 11-month-old patient for whom a split-thickness skin allograft (TheraSkin) was successfully implemented as a temporizing measure for a large leg wound. Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: Treatment of a Complex Abdominal Wound with Vitamin C and Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
Vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDSv) can present with life-threatening surgical complications. The article describes the case of a patient with EDSv who developed total abdominal wound dehiscence and multiple enterocutaneous fistulas. Treatment with IV allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and high-dose vitamin C was trialed with success. Near-complete wound healing of the abdominal dehiscence with a 94% reduction in the size of the wound bed occurred. Maturation of the enterocutaneous fistulas also ensued. Association Between Skin Injuries in Medical Staff and Protective Masks Combined with Goggles During the COVID-19 Pandemic
CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of skin injuries among medical staff wearing protective masks combined with goggles was very high. These were mainly device-related pressure injuries, moisture-associated skin damage, and skin tears. The combination of various factors resulted in skin injuries at multiple sites. Preventing and managing sweating should be a focus for medical staff who wear protective masks combined with goggles for more than 4 hours. (Source: Advances in Skin and Wound Care)
