Assessment of Hyperspectral Imaging in Pressure Injury Healing
This study used a prospective design. A total of 30 patients with sacral PIs were recruited from the rehabilitation ward of a teaching hospital. The authors used a hyperspectral detector to collect wound images and the Beer-Lambert law to estimate changes in tissue StO2 in different stages of PI. RESULTS The tissue StO2 of healthy skin and that of stage 1 PI skin were similar, whereas the tissue StO2 of the wound in stage 2 PIs was significantly higher than that of healthy skin and scabbed tissue (medians, 82.5%, 74.4%, and 68.3%; P (Source: Advances in Skin and Wound Care)

The 2021 Update on Pressure Injuries: A Review of the Literature
GENERAL PURPOSE To provide a review of the recent literature on the epidemiology and treatment of pressure injuries (PIs). TARGET AUDIENCE This continuing education activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses with an interest in skin and wound care. LEARNING OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES After participating in this educational activity, the participant will: 1. Identify risk factors for developing PIs. 2. Differentiate factors that could affect the healing of PIs. 3. Select strategies that have an impact on the development of PIs. Keeping up with the litera...

Limb Salvage with Multiple Modalities: A Case Report of a Diabetic Heel Ulcer Associated with Peripheral Arterial Disease
A large diabetic heel ulcer with peripheral arterial disease is an independent predictor of limb loss; below-knee amputation is not uncommon in such cases. One treatment is multimodal therapy, which includes partial calcanectomy. Because there is a limit to the ulcer surface area that can be sutured after partial calcanectomy, the remaining raw surface is treated with another method. In this case report, the authors describe a patient with peripheral arterial disease who had a 7 × 9-cm diabetic heel ulcer. The patient was treated with partial calcanectomy after catheter-based endovascular therapy revascularization and the...

Diagnosis and Management of a Chronic Lower-Limb Wound in a Patient with Felty Syndrome
The authors report the case of a 55-year-old patient with a chronic lower-limb wound thought to be secondary to vasculitis. This case illustrates the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion for vasculitic ulcers in patients with autoimmune disease. Management considerations in this context are also discussed. The Effectiveness of a Novel Skin Barrier Protectant in the Management of Acute Radiation Dermatitis: A Case Series
Conclusions This case series demonstrates the beneficial effects and safety of the novel skin barrier protectant in the management of ARD in patients with cancer of different etiologies. These results lay the foundation for future studies with larger, more homogeneous patient populations; a well-defined application scheme; and a stricter study design. Are Digital Arthroplasty and Arthrodesis Useful and Safe Surgical Techniques for the Management of Patients with Diabetic Foot?
OBJECTIVE To analyze and compare the development of short- and long-term complications in patients with diabetic foot after digital arthroplasty or arthrodesis. METHODS The authors reviewed patient records from January 2017 to March 2020. Patients were treated by digital arthroplasty or arthrodesis to correct toe deformity (elective or prophylactic surgery), achieve ulcer healing in toes (curative surgery), or manage toe infection (emergent surgery). During 1-year follow-up, researchers registered short- and long-term complications. Researchers analyzed the association between the type of surgery and the develop...

Outcomes of Telehealth for Wound Care: A Scoping Review
CONCLUSIONS Evidence regarding the use of telewound care is weak, and findings related to the impact of telewound care on outcomes are inconsistent but indicate that it is not inferior to in-person care. Greater use of telehealth as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic points to further development of navigation and education models of telehealth for wound care. However, additional studies using rigorous research design and leveraging robust sample sizes are needed to demonstrate value. (Source: Advances in Skin and Wound Care)
