Medical schools cause burnout. Here ’s how to fix that.
Students ’ time in medical school should help them grow and become insightful, caring doctors. Instead, medical education is somehow turning smart, gifted, enthusiastic applicants into exhausted and unhappy students who become interns, residents, and physicians at increased risk of depression and burnout. I’m no stranger to the demands of medical school. My father and father-in-law […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more. Thoughts and Prayers
Apparently the New York Times was relying on interns to handle headline writing duties over the Labor Day weekend.   Surely only an over-enthusiastic youngster fresh out of journalism school could have written, with a straight face, " Texas Shooting Brings New Urgency to Gun Debate in Congress. 4 actionable tips for new medical interns
People often compare internship to drinking from a fire hose. Overwhelmed by new information and workflow, interns (especially international) usually do not have a clear direction about how to optimize their working/learning experience. Here are some tips for interns to smooth their transition from a newbie into a high-functioning intern in the setting of medicine […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more. Thoughts after a year of podcasting
Twelve months of podcasts – 2 per month – are now available at Annals on Call. During those 12 months, I have learned a lot from my guests and learned a great deal about podcasting and interviewing. Many have asked me to tell them the story of the podcast – how did it come bout? how long does it take to podcast? how do I pick guests and topic? So here is my story. A couple of years ago Dr. Christine Laine, the excellent editor of the Annals of Internal Medicine, asked me if I would do something “social media” for the Annals. We talked about blogs and podcasts. For the next year, we deci...

How Work-Based Learning Can Bring Employers and Students Together
Work-based learning experiences help college grads better prepare for work. And WBL programs like internships often serve as a workforce pipeline for companies. WBL is also successful at the K-12 level and with“upskilling” adult workers. There are several ways Congress could foster and strengthen WBL. (Source: The RAND Blog)

Podcast: Low Self-Esteem and How it Connects to Mental Illness
As a society, we suffer from low self-esteem. A lot. The entertainment media assaults us with beautiful faces and perfect bodies, making millions feel inadequate or even ashamed. We have school children who feel that anything less than straight A’s is failure. For people living with mental illness, the impact of low self-esteem is even worse. Listen to hear how.   SUBSCRIBE & REVIEW “Physical health is extremely important in mental health.” – Michelle “All mental health is physical health!” – Gabe   Highlights From ‘Self-Esteem’ Episode [3:30] Why do we feel bad about ou...

Podcasts for UME, GME, CME – rationale
Readers know that I have become rather obsessed with medical podcasts over the past 2 years. I host Annals on Call, and have appeared on The Curbsiders and the Clinical Problem Solvers. I admire Bedside Rounds and CoreIM in particular. As I talk with students and residents, the enthusiasm for medical podcasts is growing and exciting. I personally get excited that our learners find podcasts a wonderful way to expand their medical knowledge. My peers listen to many podcasts. We often recommend podcasts and especially individual episodes to each other and our learners. Just yesterday we had a patient with true syncope. I ...

Setting expectations for new clinical learners
Monday morning we have new interns and new 3rd year students. During rounds I will set expectations for their first clinical rotation at these levels. (I also have a new 3rd year resident, but he has had all 2nd year to learn how to be a resident). What should I expect; what should they expect? In setting expectations we should try to remember our own experiences and feelings. They will be very excited and a bit scared. The interns are really doctors now, and feel that responsibility. Many have the impostor syndrome. The 3rd year students really are “newbies”, as the 3rd year of medical school has little in ...

Promote a culture of medical school peer education
I am a few days away from graduating medical school. Throughout these four years, I have given back to my medical school by passing on the knowledge and wisdom I have accumulated. I share my reflection on the importance of having medical school mentorship and teaching not just from interns, residents, fellows, and attending physicians, […]Find jobs at  Careers by KevinMD.com.  Search thousands of physician, PA, NP, and CRNA jobs now.  Learn more. Lessons learned from the National Champions
All physicians have failures. The best physicians learn from those failures. They become better physicians and work on continuous improvement. Everyone who knows me well knows that I have had a 52 year obsession with UVa basketball. While I love all the sports teams, basketball is my true love. Better wordsmiths than me would have a difficult time explaining my joy in Monday night’s championship game. You can imagine my dark place after last year’s loss in the first round. So what does this have to do with medicine. Maybe nothing, but we can learn important lessons from literature, music and sports. In th...
