Yasmine SherifBy Yasmine SherifNEW YORK, Jun 16 2021 (IPS) The climate crisis is amplifying the effects of instability and violence in the world’s poorest countries. As world leaders come together to celebrate Africa Climate Week, in the lead up to this year’s climate talks in the UK, they must look at education – especially education for girls – as a cornerstone in deliver...

What Role Can South-South Cooperation Play in Post COVID-19 Recovery?
By Matteo MarchisioBEIJING, Mar 2 2021 (IPS) Five years ago, at the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the United Nations, world leaders adopted the ambitious Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. The Agenda was to be accomplished through the achievement of 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030: eradicating poverty, ending hunger, addressing climate change – just to name a few. Matteo MarchisioThe COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 suddenly disrupted advancement toward meeting this goal, in many cases rolling back years of progress. The World Bank, for example, estimated that COVID-19 has pushed an additional 88 to 115 ...

Member of Parliament Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn. Credit: Kate Chappell By Kate ChappellKINGSTON, Jamaica, Feb 12 2021 (IPS) It was a joyful, tearful celebration in the early morning hours of Dec. 30, 2020 for countless Argentinians when they heard the news: the senate had legalized terminations up to 14 weeks of pregnancy. Prior to this, activists have said that more than 3,000 women died of botched, illegal abortions since 1983. And across the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region, this renewed sense of optimism was compounded after President Joe Biden rescinded what is known as the “global gag rule,” which essentially...

(University of Gothenburg) There is growing evidence that pregnant women who go beyond term, especially first time mothers and their infants, will benefit from induction of labour at 41 weeks, instead of expectant management with subsequent induction of labour at 42 weeks if labour will not start spontaneously. This is clearer now that researchers from Sweden and the Netherlands have appraised results from three previous investigations. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)

COMMENTARY: The Sinatra Doctrine Confronts a Global Consensus
A photo-collage. Credit: Peter Costantini.By Peter CostantiniSEATTLE, Oct 23 2020 (IPS) By late September, the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States had claimed 200,000 lives. That’s equivalent to a slightly higher toll than the 418,500 United States deaths in World War II, adjusted for relative population and duration. [See note below.] With four percent of the world’s population, the U.S. has suffered 20 percent of global COVID-19 deaths. Tragically, most of these deaths need never have happened. They were caused primarily by the public-health equivalent of friendly fire: massive malpractice and deception by the Don...
