Pain management and a chemical menopause
Current CA125 level: 11Current pain level: highMood: weary and uncertainThings have been on a bit of a roller coaster since I last wrote. Everything had been starting to get better since the hysterectomy last July and I was starting to feel physically stronger. Then a few months ago the pain came back and it's been getting worse ever since.I've always had some residual abdominal pain since the hysterectomy but day-to-day things had started to become a bit easier, like walking Molly to school and carrying Tess around. I got to Christmas feeling positive about the future and hopeful that hospital admissions were fina...

The 31 Days of Blood Sugar Control
(28,29,30...as the case may be.Warning:the below post is about women stuff!!)If you don't have diabetes, or much of a relationship with a PWD..you are probably laboring under the assumption that blood sugar control is easy. You are either "in" or "out." (Think Top Chef) This is an assumption that has permeated every inch of society, to the point where even educating those willing to learn TAKES YEARS for them to get.(Namely, that blood sugars are a living, fluid thing...not at all static and stuck on "104") - you go low in the grocery store,a kind soul hands you a sugary drink..and assumes you are fragile,etc.-you eat a brow...

Morcellation of Fibroids To Be Eliminated by Boston Hospitals
Morcellation of fibroids is commonly done during laparoscopic hysterectomy to aid in removal of a large amount of tissue through a small surgical port in the abdomen. Unfortunately, this procedure has recently been implicated in the development of widespread intra-abdominal cancer in two women recently in Boston. In response, Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston are banning the procedure in fibroid removal surgeries. Dr. Amy Reed is one patient who is now battling stage IV cancer after the procedure spread leiomyosarcoma cells contained within a fibroid throughout her abdomen. The...

Surgery Scheduled
It's the morning (3:00 am) of my gallbladder surgery.  No food or drink after midnight, but I snuck in a cup of coffee so I wouldn't get a caffeine headache later. What happened to cause the need for surgery was at about 1:00 am Tuesday morning, I got up and had some potato chips and Cheetoes.  I don't know why, why am I even a night eater?  I went back to bed and woke up around 3 because I was in pain.  I thought it would go away eventually, but it didn't.  It kept getting worse so around 6:00am I think, it had become about the worst pain I had ever known and was still getting worse.  Mar...

Business, as usual
A story in HealthLeaders Media by Marianne Aiello asks "Can University of Illinois Hospital Save Its Brand?"A decision by hospital leaders to participate in an advertising effort with an equipment vendor was intended to promote institutional expertise with robotic surgery. Instead it sparked an outcry among critics.Despite the countless blog posts, tweets, and articles published about the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System's da Vinci advertisement controversy, I'm still left with one resounding question: How did so many high-ranking officials think featuring several physicians and staff...

Robotic surgery: The Sequel?
The first time was such a hit, why not do it again?  I refer, of course, to the marketing ploy used by Intuitive Surgical, Inc. when it introduced robotic surgery in the prostatectomy scene.  Go with direct-to-consumer advertising to give the impression that the results from robotic surgery are better than from manual laparoscopic surgery.  Make sure the early-adopter surgeons are on board and publicly proclaiming their great results.  When it comes to men and the functioning of their penises, you can predict the result.  Who can argue with that kind of success?  The stock market rewarded the ...

Kelly’s Cervical Cancer Journey
Below are experts from Kelly, author and creator of the blog My Cervical Cancer Journey. In her blog, she details her fight with cervical cancer from 2010 to the present.   My name is Kelly and I was diagnosed with cervical cancer stage 2 in May 2010.  I had no idea what I was in for!  You hear the word cancer and you have two choices:  curl up in a ball or you fight.  I am not a doctor but want to share my story from the patient point of view to help others. I was 41 years old at the time of the diagnoses.  I am a single mother of triplets.  I was scared.  My symptoms were constant bleeding.  During the same tim...

Women report complications from Essure
CHICAGO -- Angie Derry knew that her Essure implants were designed to remain inside her body forever. But two years after a doctor inserted the tiny coils into her fallopian tubes to prevent pregnancy, the Rockford, Ill., woman wants them removed.Derry, 35, isn't hoping to have more children. Instead, she wonders whether getting rid of the implants will somehow alleviate the mysterious ailments that she said began after seeking permanent birth control with Essure in 2011.At the very least, Derry wants to rule out Essure as the cause of her joint, back and pelvic pain, chronic low-grade fever, cramping, numbness and tinglin...

Overcast with a Chance of Showers
Summer 2012After my rock-climbing group vacation last summer, my new friend, KMac, read my memoir. My last chapter is an excursion into self-discovery—the boy who grew up with immense suffering becomes a man without much. I list all the people in my life who have passed away resulting from cancer: three grandparents, some patients I met in treatment, a friend’s dad, and some others. The list was shorter than expected because until recently, I pushed the cancer community away.Of the 15 cancer “survivors” on our vacation, some were still in treatment and some would begin again soon. This is the nature of young people...

Reaching A Post-Cancer Milestone
Number of years cancer-free: 5Current CA125 level: 14How I feel: very proudIt's been four months since I had my emergency hysterectomy and, thanks to getting a couple of infections, it's been a long recovery process. But I'm finally out the other side now and apart from some soreness if I attempt to do too much, I feel much more like myself. Just in time to celebrate a big personal milestone. After I finished chemotherapy for the second time I wasn't sure how long I'd have before the cancer came back - after all, the cancer came back just six months after I finished my first course of chemo. So, making plans for the...

6th Anniversary Today!
Today is our anniversary!  6 years, but we've been together over 16.  In 16 years, SO MUCH has happened!  Even in the last 6 years!  It's amazing to me how people can stay together this long.  We've weathered many storms and had some very awesome times together.  I wouldn't want to be with anyone else.  Yet...even after all this time, I still worry that we will break up one day.  Everyone in my life has always gone away eventually, except for this relationship.  I've never had any relationship - spouse, friends, family, last this long.  And actually, were it not f...

Crabby Gets Schooled
As regular readers may recall, I am now in the process of studying for the ACE Health Coach Certification which I will take in about week's time.  According to the Trans-Theoretical Model of Change (which they are very big on at ACE), I seem to be moving from Stage II: Slothful Procrastination, to Stage III, Freak Out and Realize it's Time to Get Your Ass in Gear. So, rather than attempt to scrounge up breaking news about an important health and fitness topic, I decided it might be a good time to put the "Cranky" back into Cranky Fitness! So how 'bout I slop together a quick post bitching about test-re...
