You May Need to Rethink Medication for ADHD
Let me start by saying that the decision to give medication to a child always rests with the parent. If a parent feels uncomfortable about medication, they should not be shamed or coerced into feeling differently. That being said, there is a lot of misinformation and misguided notions out there on not only ADHD medication, but the disease itself. My goal is to educate people on what ADHD is, what it is not, and the facts regarding treatment. I have no agenda other than that, and no, there is no pharmaceutical company paying for this article. Let’s answer some questions! What is ADHD? ADHD is a disease. It is a neurologic...

Dec 16, Robert Resnick: Today in the History of Psychology (16th December 1940)
Robert Resnick was born. A pioneer in the study and treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Resnick established one of the first ADHD clinics in the United States. Resnick is also renowned for his role as a passionate defender of professional practice within psychology; exemplified in 1977 when he acted as lead complainant in the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark ruling recognizing psychology as both an autonomous profession and an economic competitor of psychiatry. Robert Resnick was elected president of the American Psychological Association in 1995 and received the American Psychological Foundation Gol...

ADHD And Self-Esteem. What Lowers It, What Raises It?
Here are notes from my nonprofit Vancouver Adult ADD Support Group September 6th 2016 Meeting on the topic of ADHD and self-esteem. In my experience, most adults with ADHD have problems with self-esteem, regardless of external accomplishments. I’ve coached hundreds of ADHD entrepreneurs and people in the workplace (I don’t coach students), and some have been very externally successful by many measures. Yet in doing phone coaching of ADHD adults since 2003 and running an adult ADHD support group since 2004, I have rarely met any adults with ADHD who do not have problems with self-esteem. See notes from other Va...

We are different and suffer from individual challenges. Yet we pull from the same well of humanity that makes us vulnerable to similar things. We have basic needs like food, air and water. And we have a shared desire for connection, love, and validation. Within each of us is a calling to give and receive, be seen, as well as heard. If you strip away our class, race, and culture, we are at our core vulnerable beings. We spend the beginning our lives being taught to hide that fact and adulthood struggling to rediscover who we are and what we truly feel. Every time I felt alone in my suffering, all I needed to do was reach ou...

If you are a truth teller you may experience two extremes. There will be people who can’t stand to be near you and others who are drawn to you. It can be an isolating path when you speak honestly. But when you do it in company of those who are comfortable sharing theirs, it’s like coming home. All of us are looking to be heard, and validated for who we are. But many of us are too afraid of rejection to remove our protective shells. It’s much easier to hide behind false perfection or superficial niceties. But when we share what we really think and how we really feel, we open the light in. This light invites others ...

The Dangers of Rising Adderall Abuse among Teens
Call it a case of unintended consequences. Twenty years ago, the prescription medication Adderall debuted as a treatment for narcolepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A stimulant, with amphetamine as its active ingredient, Adderall helped sufferers of narcolepsy stay awake, but it also increased mental focus and endurance for those diagnosed with ADHD. Because of its effectiveness and relatively mild side effects, Adderall quickly became a common treatment for ADHD. But as its popularity increased, use of Adderall also began spreading beyond the people it was intended for. Today, students without ADH...

ADHD and Blue Light Syndrome: Changing Sleep is Key to Changing Success at Home and at School
Each year billions of dollars are spent in the US trying to improve the experience of children with ADHD and their parents. But one of the simplest and most effective ADHD interventions is often neglected. One in ten American children aged 5–17 years has been diagnosed with ADHD, with boys more than twice as likely to be diagnosed as girls. The hyperactivity, impulsiveness and attention problems can be quite disruptive to the kids, their homes, and their classrooms. The great majority of children diagnosed with ADHD are treated with prescription medications. It’s not clear that this is a great long-term solution, with ...

Mental Health and Addiction Among Inmates
Working with offenders allows you to see many interesting phenomena. Not only do you get to observe interesting behaviors and get a glimpse inside the thinking patterns of criminals, but there are interesting sociological observations as well. One of which is how life inside the walls mirror what is going on in society; cultural diversity, violence, drug use, etc. While there is nothing new about drug use inside prisons, a new and interesting occurrence seems to be taking place. It would appear that much of the drug\alcohol use may be attributable to the inmates engaging in self-medication to treat known (or undiagnosed) ...

Is It Withdrawal Symptoms or a Depression Relapse
Four years ago, a good friend of mine put her 10-year-old son on Prozac (fluoxetine). He had always suffered from anxiety and anger outbursts, but at age 9, his behavior turned violent, and his ruminations were keeping him up at night. My friend and her husband went to a variety of child psychologists, but the cognitive behavioral therapy wasn’t enough. Finally, they got a referral to a psychiatrist, who diagnosed the boy with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The doctor prescribed both Ritalin (methylphenidate) and Prozac. The bo...

The Many Conditions that Mimic Depression
Finding the right diagnosis for any disorder requires a comprehensive evaluation. Because many illnesses share many of the same symptoms. Take symptoms such as headache, stomachache, dizziness, fatigue, lethargy, insomnia and appetite loss. There are countless conditions with these exact signs. Similarly, many mental illnesses share the same symptoms, said Stephanie Smith, PsyD, a psychologist in practice in Erie, Colo., who specializes in working with individuals with depression. Which makes “the process of diagnosing mental illness tricky, to say the least.” For instance, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADH...

10 Ways to Prevent Mania and Hypomania
Bipolar disorder is one of the most difficult illnesses to treat because by addressing the depression part of the illness, you can inadvertently trigger mania or hypomania. Even in Bipolar II, where the hypomania is less destabilizing than the often-psychotic manic episodes of Bipolar I, persons often experience from a debilitating depression that can’t be lifted by mood stabilizers and antipsychotics. Antidepressants, though, can cause a person with bipolar to cycle between hypomania and depression. I have worked with psychiatrists who were too afraid of cycling to risk using antidepressants for bipolar patients. They p...
