I hate heartburn
I really, really, really hate heartburn. I am at the point where I could even say I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really hate heart burn. I get heart burn all the time.I take Prilosec (or the cheaper version from Costco) daily. I take tums as needed. I watch what I eat.I have a  hiatal hernia which is on the border between being big and small. It is 3cm and small is considered 3cm, so I guess its middle sized. It helps contribute to heart burn.I am also on meloxicam for my back which is an anti inflammatory and has a tendency to irritate stomachs. But if I don't take it, I get more aches and ...

Avoiding Tort Hell? Pfizer Gets A Chance To Overturn Generic Injury Ruling
Earlier this year, the Alabama Supreme Court issued a highly contentious ruling that Pfizer can be sued by a man who claimed he was injured by a generic version of its Reglan heartburn medicine, because the brand-name drugmaker purportedly failed to warn his physician about the risks. Now, the court has granted a request for a re-hearing in September to reverse what some say could become 'tort hell' (here is the order). As we wrote in an earlier story: This is one of the few instances in which a court has found that a brand-name drugmaker can be sued even though a consumer had taken only a generic, suggesting that consumer...

Apps to help manage medications in the elderly: What I’m looking for
I’ve been interested in apps for the caregivers of elders, but like many physicians, I’ve been too busy to seriously research them or try them out. Time to change that. No, I’m not going to exhaustively research and review all caregiver apps on the market. But, as I’ve been invited to give a technology talk to a local group of family caregivers later this summer, I would like to see if I can find a few specific apps or tools that are likely to help caregivers. As this is an event specifically for younger caregivers, I’m expecting a group of caregivers that is generally comfortable with smartph...

A Little Stormy Weather is at Hand
I think I am slowly earning back some respect from my father.  He’s seen me come an incredibly long way in these past five years. He treats me very differently these days than the days of old. We often talk on the phone and he is much, much kinder to me and forgiving of my foibles. He can be such a hard-ass at times. We just talked 30 minutes about the weather and my mother. My father is so irreverent when it comes to my mother. He will tell me of her shenanigans and will laugh and laugh. “You’re mother sure is a pistol!” he will often say. “She just had gas and heartburn,” dad said a moment ago of my moth...

Martha, Give Me a Wake Up Call
Busy day today so I will be brief.  The day started out early as I woke up at 8 am to a shrill alarm clock.  I showered and dressed and headed to the Juneteenth Jubilee at 9am.  I zeroed in on Mrs. Florene’s pound cake and bought it for $12.  Mrs. Florene then introduced me to some of her recent church friends.  Everybody was cordial. I only stayed about 30 minutes and then I headed to get Maggie. “This is my son’s best friend, Andrew,” Mrs.Florene would say as we greeted certain people. Getting Maggie home was a chore as Maggie weighs almost 30 pounds and I have to carry her. I don’t t...

Acupuncture Improves Diabetic Gastroparesis
By Diane Fennell "Needleless" acupuncture can provide relief for people dealing with diabetic gastroparesis, according to new research recently presented at the 2013 Digestive Disease Week meeting in Orlando, Florida. As many as 50% of people with diabetes will develop gastroparesis. Gastroparesis, most commonly caused by damage to the nerve fibers that control the movements of the stomach, is a condition in which the stomach's ability to move food into the small intestine is reduced. This slow stomach emptying results in a variety of symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, feelings of fullness after eating, a lack of app...

EsophyX for Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF) Proves Itself in Trial (w/video)
Fundoplication surgery has been around since the 1950′s as an option to treating gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and hiatus hernia. The technique normally requires an invasive procedure and involves suturing the upper part of the stomach around the lower part of the esophagus. This provides the added strength to the lower esophageal sphincter and prevents the expansion of the esophageal hiatus.EsophyX, a device introduced a few years ago by EndoGastric Solutions (Redwood City, CA), offers a new, minimally invasive way for performing fundoplications.  The entire procedure is performed using an incisionless te...

Chef Pete Evans goes wheat-free!
Australian chef and TV personality, Pete Evans, asked me to write a section for his new cookbook: Over the last 12 months we have been working on a new cookbook, which will be available in about a years time [February 2014]. Dr William Davis, a preventative cardiologist who wrote “WHEAT BELLY” (a must read book) has kindly shared his research for our new book, along with a host of other highly respected health and wellness pioneers and experts. And for the record the only flour we use at home is coconut and almond flours. Pete tells me that, in the new cookbook, “there will be no recipes featuring wheat&...

Fibro what?
So I was told last September that I have fibromyalgia by my rheumatologist. I had been referred to her by my pain management doctor who had been treating me for my back pain from degenerating disks. I also had pain in lots of other places that was getting worse over the years as opposed to better. His diagnosis to my rheumatologist was myofascial pain or fibromyalgia with possible rheumatoid arthritis.Well the rheumatologist confirmed within ten minutes of meeting me that I had fibromyalgia. My pain doctor had put me on Savella, Lyrica, and Cymbalta at different times in the past to treat my pain. Those are the only medica...

Mexican Thursday’s With a Turn and a Twist….
I lost all my iTunes downloads many months ago when one of my hard drives crashed.  I learned today that I can download them again and have been busily downloading all the treasured music I had lost – several hundred dollars worth.  Mom called me this evening as I was doing this. “What do you want for supper?” mom asked me this evening.. “Prime rib sounds about good to me!” I said chirpily and happily. Mom laughed. “No silly,” she said. “I am getting us all takeout from the El Rio Grande.” “Just get me the #26 or what I have been getting lately,” I replied. It is two shredded chicken...

FDA May Change Warning Regs For Generic Labels
Last year, the US Supreme Court ruled generic drugmakers are not required to strengthen labeling even when alerted to side effects. The decision came in response to lawsuits by two women who claimed changes could have been made under state law and without FDA approval. They argued generic drugmakers would create uncertainty about safety if they are not held liable under state laws and update labeling in the face of evidence of serious side effects. Under current FDA regulations, however, generic drugmakers cannot update labeling, even if they become aware of a potential risk not mentioned in the labeling. Brand-name drugm...

Bisphosphonates Have Been Linked To Esophageal Cancer Adding to the List of Possible Problems They Can Cause
Once again, bisphosphonates are in the news, this time being linked to esophageal cancer. Bisphosphonates are a common treatment used for osteoporosis. We have written about it on our site before for the damage they can cause to bones. Bisphosphonates, especially in the case of osteoporosis, cause the bones to have constant turnover, and inhibits the digestion of bone by osteoclasts. Bisphosphonates actually create an abnormal bone, which is relatively fine for about seven years and then becomes more prone to breaking. It’s also noted that prolonged treatment, while it can decrease the number of fractures, can actually ...
