Notes from the 2023 Age-Related Disease Therapeutics Summit
The former Longevity Therapeutics conference series was renamed to the Age-Related Disease Therapeutics Summit and held its fifth event recently in San Francisco. It was a smaller meeting than in past years, perhaps a result of the recent downturn in the global financial and investment environment. Few investors were present. Nonetheless, one can usually learn something interesting from the presenting biotech founders and executives. I took a few notes while I was there to present on progress at Repair Biotechnologies, and they follow in the order of the conference program. Birget Schilling from the Buck Institute f...

Notes from the Rejuvenation Startup Summit, Held in Berlin in October 2022
We presented recent results showing reversal of liver inflammation and fibrosis in NASH model mice, and noted that we're raising funds to start our clinical development program leading to human trials. Therapies to reverse atherosclerosis progression will follow shortly on the heels of this work on NASH. Robin Mansukhani of Deciduous Therapeutics discussed their approach to immune system modulation via small molecules, training invariant natural killer cells to attack senescent cells. Introducing Mother Shipton
Let me introduce Mother Shipton. This is the moth Euclidia mi. It’s a day-flying moth, darts between resting places quite quickly during May and June. It’s a fairly common species, but I’d only ever seen it briefly once before and didn’t get a decent shot of the upper side of its wings. This one was feeding on hawthorn alongside some Common Heath moths on Devil’s Dyke in Cambridgeshire. The larvae feed on trifolium, clover, and some grasses. Mother Shipton moth The vernacular name alludes to the renowned 16th Century soothsayer and alleged witch Mother Shipton (aka Ursula Southeil (ca. 1488–...

Grasshopper Warbler, Locustella naevia
I’m fairly sure I’d heard this rare bird at RSPB Fowlmere several years ago but as a very, very amateur “birder“, I’d not seen one and certainly not seen one calling until this week. We took a trip to RSPB Titchwell on 2nd May 2021 and could hear one in the reed bed adjacent to the main footpath from the visitor centre, but didn’t catch a glimpse of the bird. A second visit in the week (5th May) and we could definitely hear the insect-like call of the bird and finally pinned it down to a patch of gorse and hawthorn not far from Patsy’s reedbed. The Common Grasshopper Warbler is on...

The golden moth that laid the eggs
Among the dozens and dozens of Yellow Underwings of various kinds, the milieu of Rustics, the Rose-flounced Tabbies, the Mouse Moth, the Least Carpets, a solitary Elephant Hawk-moth, and several tens of other species, there was a crispy-looking golden wonder that came to the actinic light trap in the night yesterday. A female Oak Eggar, Lasiocampa quercus. Oak Eggar, Lasiocampa quercus The species is sexually dimorphic, so it was obvious this was a female even before she laid a dozen eggs in the specimen pot. Incidentally, the species is called Eggar because the silky cocoons the larvae make are quite large and obviously ...
