Characterization, antioxidant activity and in vitro digestion of hawthorn pectin prepared by gradient ethanol precipitation
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 4:131278. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131278. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFour modified hawthorn pectin fractions (MHPs), named MHP-30, MHP-50, MHP-70 and MHP-90, were obtained by ultrasonic-assisted pectin methyl esterase modification and gradient ethanol precipitation. The results indicated that all four MHPs were composed of galacturonic acid, galactose, xylose, arabinose, glucose and mannose in different proportions. With the increase of the ethanol concentration, the molecular weight, esterification degree and galacturonic acid content of MHPs all decreased, whereas the arabinose conte...

Investigation of accumulation of element contents in some wild and cultivated dried fruits
In this study, the moisture and biogenic element quantities of most wild and cultivated edible dried fruits were investigated. Macroelements found in highest amounts in fruits were K, P, Ca, and Mg. While K quantities of the fruits are recorded between 5212.77 ("white myrtle") and 25550.60 mg/kg ("black nightshade"), P amounts of the fruits were characterized to be between 949.08 (black myrtle) and 4420.75 mg/kg ("black nightshade"). Ca and Mg amounts of the fruits were assessed to be between 359.83 (plum) and 4330.89 mg/kg ("yellow hawthorn") to 214.98 (plum) and 1852.04 mg/kg ("black nightshade"), respectively. Fe and B ...

An examination of the effects of eye-tracking on behavior in psychology experiments
We examined whether eye-tracking produced Hawthorne effects in six commonly used psychological scales and five behavioral tasks. The dependent measures were selected because they are widely used and cited and because they involved measures of sensitive topics, including gambling behavior, racial bias, undesirable personality characteristics, or because they require working memory or executive attention resources, which might be affected by Hawthorne effects. The only task where Hawthorne effects manifested was the mixed gambles task, in which participants accepted or rejected gambles involving a 50/50 chance of gaining or ...

Natural hyperoside extracted from hawthorn exhibits antiviral activity against porcine epidemic diarrhea virus in vitro and in vivo
Virology. 2024 Mar 11;594:110037. doi: 10.1016/j.virol.2024.110037. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPorcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) causes severe diarrhea and death in piglets, resulting in significant economic losses for the pork industry. There is an urgent need for new treatment strategies. Here, we focused on optimizing the process of purifying natural hyperoside (nHYP) from hawthorn and evaluating its effectiveness against PEDV both in vitro and in vivo. Our findings demonstrated that nHYP with a purity >98% was successfully isolated from hawthorn with an extraction rate of 0.42 mg/g. Furthermore, nHYP exhibit...
