Escape to the north
The foxy Loch Maree Last week Gareth and I went on a four-day jaunt around Skye and north-west Scotland. We lucked out with 75% blue skies. Between this trip and Islay last July, I feel like I’ve used up my Good Scotland Weather allowance for life! I don’t know what possessed us to plan 850 miles of driving in such a small time frame. Some of those miles were due to a ferry cancellation, but every time we stopped in yet another stunning, chilled out locale we’d say, “Why the hell didn’t we just stay here for three nights?”. I think it’s a hangover from my backpacking days when I...

Can’t Sleep? Try This Guided Meditation Talkdown Video
Sleep is an essential component of good mental health, and trouble sleeping can be a symptom of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and other conditions, as well as simply resulting from stress. While there are medication options, they don’t offer the revitalization of natural sleep. Sedation doesn’t mimic normal sleep and can interfere with the REM stage of dreaming, which is important to feel refreshed in the morning. Often, there’s a “hangover effect” of grogginess the next day. Sleeping pills are also addictive and should be used with caution, infrequently. A good alternative is a guide...

What's up
I made my blog private and it's weird yet nice at the same time because I'm only writing for myself. My psychiatrist put me on Trazadone for sleep, and while it definitely improved my sleep, the side effects were awful. My stomach blew up like a ballon and actually hurt. I got a backache yet it wasn't an injury. I could move like normal and did things like touch my toes and swivel from side to side and it didn't hurt any worse at all. So somehow it was the Trazadone. I also had a groggy Trazadone hangover. When I see my doctor, I'll tell her about it, but I'm a pretty hard sell to try  something new again.I took Bailey...

A 'good journey' of promise
There is nothing to put age on you like returning to the former stomping grounds of your college campus...and at last, realize you can no longer pass - even by a longshot- for an undergrad student. Trust me, I tried yesterday- sneaking back to my old dorm. Now I am an officially seen as a card-carrying alum- might as well face it. With all affection and reverence, of course.Yesterday as I gave the keynote speech at the 2014 Woman of Promise awards, I realized how far I have come since the time I sat as a petrified freshman in that same auditorium in which I was now taking the podium. I looked up in the audie...

Why Fasting Can Be Beneficial
This spring I’ve decided to go on a fast. For 40 days, I will be giving up consumption of meat and chocolate. Why do people fast and what is the meaning behind it? Fasting is an act of willing abstinence or reduction from certain foods or drinks, or both for a certain period of time. We’ve all done it, whether we’ve realized it or not. Many of us have had a horrible morning with a vicious hangover and have stopped drinking for a period of time. I’m also pretty sure that at one point you’ve decided to stay away from a particular food that gave you food poisoning or made you feel sick. I don’t think fasting...

MS Symptom Thesaurus: Isolation, a Social Side Effect
It may not be an actual symptom of the disease multiple sclerosis, but the feeling of being utterly and totally alone is real.  How would you describe MS Isolation? How time flies.  We’ve been at the MS Symptom Thesaurus thing for nearly a year.  For the past 11 months, we’ve covered the common symptoms of MS such as fatigue and pain and the less so – which we arguably need the most help describing – like dysphagia and nystagmus. You can see all of our MS Symptom Thesaurus posts by either clicking here or “MS Symptom Thesaurus” in our “Popular Topics” tool bar to the right of the page. While there are pl...

How to Tell if You Have Mind Parasites and How To Get Rid Of Them If You Do
Susan woke early. Early for her was any time before eight on weekdays. Weekends she would sleep in until ten or ten-thirty. However on weekdays, eight meant that she had just enough time to get ready for work, grab a bowl of Special K and get to work three minutes late.Three minutes late was her little protest that nobody could complain about. It meant she was independent. This particular morning she had a hangover, though she was a full decade out of college and graduation was the last time, on stiff rum and cokes, she had been drunk, perhaps her hangover was a result of her desire not to be at work. "Maybe I am catch...

It's coming. It's coming for all of us.
At this point, it doesn't matter whether it's a mismatch between this year's flu shot and this year's virus, or a secret government plot, or just plain crappy luck: everybody I know, practically, has the flu.We have nine full-time nurses in our unit. Two of them have pneumonia. A third is out for another week, until the Tamiflu and chicken soup kick in. The remaining half-dozen of us are bathing in alcohol foam, refusing to get too close to each other (I swear; it's like Sweden up in there), and running away from anybody with the slightest hint of a cough. I myself have taken to bathing daily in boiling bleach and wrapping...

Look Like You Don't Have a Hangover in Minutes Flat With These Beauty Tips
It's New Year's Eve! And, as to be expected, my favorite part of the night out is getting all glammed up. My least favorite? Looking like I've been hit by a truck the next day. Usually, I just wallow in bed until it doesn't matter anymore, but this year I'm staying with my boyfriend's parents, so I need to look human at some point before noon. The whole thing should take you less than fifteen minutes flat. (Source: The ND Blog: Notes from the Nutritionista by Monica Reinagel, L.D.N., C.N.S.)

Best of Our Blogs: December 31, 2013
“If you are depressed, you are living in the Past. If you are anxious, living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the moment.” – Lao Tzu Happy New Year’s Eve! Or should I say a not so happy 2014? When we’re remorseful about the past, we’re depressed. When we’re worried about the future, we’re anxious. Anxiety and depression are two sides of the same time coin. And since the end of the year also brings reflection and contemplation, it’s makes us vulnerable to both. For those of us who are extra sensitive to mental illness, it’s important to make a ...

FINALLY! Use This Glitter-Specific Base Coat for Your NYE Mani
New Year's Eve totally make me want to overload on glitter-based, crazy glam nail art (I've been planning a mani along the lines of Ke$ha's American Music Awards look since she rocked it.) Buuuuut peeling it off the morning after (because you know we'll forget our Elmer's Glue trick, especially if we're on the road.) is almost as bad as the inevitable hangover. The peeling, soaking, buffing, scrubbing mess that is usually removing glitter can't be good for your nails -- even though it's just so freaking pretty. To the rescue? OPI's awesome new Glitter Off Base Coat, which is my new shiny, sparkly BFF. (Source: The ND B...
