This week we answer listener questions about Bio Oil and other products. But first, another game of Improbable Products… Improbable Products Which of these bad body odor products is not real: The iPhone bad breathalyzer that tells you if you have halitosis. Odor detecting gym socks that change color when you feet start to smell. The Smart Deodorant stick that automatically dispenses just the right amount of deodorant so your arm pits don’t smell. Listen to the show for the answer! Does Bio Oil work? Bio Oil consists of mineral oil, triisononanoin, cetearyl ethylhexanoate, isopropyl myristate, retinyl palmitate...

I lost the wheat, but didn’t lose the weight: Updated version
Yes, it happens: Rid your life of all things wheat and you get relief from acid reflux, joint pain, and high blood sugars . . . but not weight loss. While most people enjoy rapid and dramatic weight loss with wheat elimination due to the loss of the appetite-stimulating effect of gliadin-derived opiates, the loss of repetitive glucose-insulin provocation of amylopectin A, the reduction of inflammation from the combined effects of gliadin/wheat germ agglutinin/amylopectin A, and reversal of the leptin-blocking effect of wheat germ agglutinin, this doesn’t happen to everybody. Or you lose, say, 20 pounds, only to have...

How to tell if your makeup primer is worth it. Episode 71
This week Randy and I explain how to test your makeup primer to see if it’s worth the money. Improbable products You know this game – I look for beauty products that are just too ridiculous to be true, then I make up one that’s even more ridiculous and challenge Perry to guess which one is fake. Can you spot the phony? The HeMan nail brush If you’re too macho for those dainty plastic brushes that women used to scrub their fingernails then you’ll love this new brush made from an actual galvanized box nail with bristles attached to one side. The iBrush There’s nothing worse than wanting to sn...

Carbon Dioxide Enrichment of Peach Trees: How Sweet It Is!
Craig D. Idso In our all-too-politically-correct world, carbon dioxide (CO2) frequently gets a bad rap, demonized for its potential and unverified effects on climate. However, if the truth be told, carbon dioxide is a magnificent molecule, essential to nearly all life on Earth. It is the primary raw material from which plants construct their tissues and grow during the process of photosynthesis. Perhaps it should come as no surprise, therefore, that plants perform this essential function ever better as atmospheric CO2 levels climb ever higher, a fact demonstrated in literally thousands of laboratory and field studies (see...

Are natural extracts better than water?
Liz asks…Since water is usually the first ingredient of any shampoo… then all these extracts are basically taking the place of plain old water. What would make this formulation different is the concentration of the extracts in the purified water, no? The Beauty Brains respond: Think of it like this, Liz: Let’s say my shampoo is made of mostly water (about 90%) and the rest (10%) is detergent, preservative, thickener, color, etc. So my ingredient list would read something like… “Water, detergent, preservative, thickener, color, etc.” Now, let’s say I want to make this formula look more nat...

Is Clinique Even Better Eyes any better?
Madeleinmia asks…I recently heard about Clinique’s new Even Better Eyes Dark Circle Corrector. They claim that it “strengthens” the skin to make it less transparent and that it reduces dark circles by up to 30%. Being a dark circle sufferer all my life I really want to believe that it actually works, but I have a feeling that you are going to tell me it’s all just clever marketing BS. The Beauty Brains respond: Let’s take a look at what Clinique says about this product and compare that to the benefits provided by its ingredients. What does Clinique really claim? Here’s a summary of the...

ACC Leadership and Grape Varietals
This post was authored by William Bommer, MD, FACC, governor of the California chapter of the ACC. The ACC was founded by dedicated physicians who wanted to improve professional education and cardiovascular health. Subsequent generations have continued to foster optimal cardiovascular care and disease prevention through professional education, promotion of research, leadership in the development of standards and guidelines, and the formulation of health care policy. The development of future leaders requires education, training, and mentoring. In comparing the nurturing, growth, development, and success of our leaders, i...

Are these silk baby sunscreen wipes the safest bet for my child?
Concerned Mom has a question…I am afraid because I hear how dangerous sunblock is but Baby Silk Babysafe Sunscreen Towelettes says it’s natural and made of silk would this be a good substitute? The Beauty Brains respond:  While you certainly want to be careful about what you put on your baby’s skin, the dangers of sunscreen are over-exaggerated. And speaking of exaggeration, let’s take a look at this product. Is silk a good sunscreen? Even though the product is called a “Baby Silk Sunscreen” it actually contains the physical sunblocking agents Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. That...

Does taking supplements help IVF patients ?
Practically all women doing IVF are taking supplements of one sort or another ! These are supposed to improve egg yield, egg quality and embryo implantation , thus helping to improve IVF pregnancy rates.  I have come across women who take over 10 different supplements daily – and I wonder how they manage to swallow so many different tablets, syrups and capsules in a day ! On second thoughts thought,  it is not surprising , because the craving for a baby can make a woman move heaven and earth; which means taking umpteen supplements is not such a difficult task to accomplish. I have heard the following qu...

Hydroxatone Luminique Facial Brightener: in the Beauty Brains Bathroom
Skin lightening products are always controversial because it’s so hard to say if they really work or not. It takes months of usage to see if there truly is any change in skin pigmentation. So all we can really go by is the science of the ingredients that the products use. In the case of Luminuque, that science is an ingredient called Diacetyl Boldine, an extract from the Chilean Boldo tree. You don’t see this used in very many skin lighteners and I could find no data published in peer-reviewed journals to show how it works. However, there does appear to be at least one, small study conducted by the manufacturer...
