Fight Aging! Newsletter, December 20th 2021
In conclusion, the low dose, prolonged angiotensin II exposure is associated with the induction of senescence in kidneys and the promotion of an inflammatory microenvironment through both secreted factors and immune cells. Endothelial cells appear to be a major cell type impacted. The elimination of senescent cells in the INK-ATTAC transgenic model prevents these effects of angiotensin II and reveals a novel pathophysiologic mechanism amenable to targeting by senolytic drugs in development. Procyanidin C1 as a Senotherapeutic
This open access paper runs through a range of data for the assessment of procyanidin C1 as a senolytic compound capable of selectively destroying senescent cells, both in cell studies and in animal studies. Procyanidin C1 clearly isn't as good as dasatinib and quercetin (or fisetin alone) in mice, but it does extend mouse life span by a little under 10%. The mechanism of action appears to involve induction of mitochondrial dysfunction in senescent cells, leading to programmed cell death, but there is a good deal of work remaining in order to fully understand how procyanidin C1 achieves this outcome, and whether or not it ...

Cures for Cerumen Impaction
Cerumen impaction removal may not be considered an emergent procedure in the emergency department, but this omnipresent natural phenomenon will bring patients, from infants to the elderly, to your department at all hours of the day and night because loss of hearing is a foreign and uncomfortable sensation.Cerumen impaction can cause complete hearing loss, pain, dizziness, chronic cough, and even infection. Patients who attempt to remove cerumen at home can end up with otitis externa or otitis media and even tympanic membrane trauma. The cerumen can block visualization of the tympanic membrane so TM rupture or ear infect...

Feast on fats
One of the most common mistakes people make when starting out on the Wheat Belly lifestyle is to remain fearful of fats. They continue to hold onto old misconceptions such as “fats raise cholesterol,” or “fat causes heart disease,” or “fats are calorie-dense and therefore make you fat.” None of this is true, no more true than “healthy whole grains” are a key to overall health. (The rationale dashing all these misconceptions is discussed in detail in Wheat Belly Total Health.) This accounts for why some people, even after removing the gliadin-derived opiates that come from wheat and related grains, continue...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, August 13th 2018
We report that the disruption of excitation-contraction coupling contributes to impaired force generation in the mouse model of Sod1 deficiency. Briefly, we found a significant reduction in sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase (SERCA) activity as well as reduced expression of proteins involved in calcium release and force generation. Another potential factor involved in EC uncoupling in Sod1-/- mice is oxidative damage to proteins involved in the contractile response. In summary, this study provides strong support for the coupling between increased oxidative stress and disruption of cellular excitation contraction mac...

Repair Biotechnologies Closes Seed Round, Joins Grapeseed.bio Incubator
I had promised a short update on progress at Repair Biotechnologies, the company that Bill Cherman and I founded earlier this year to help advance the state of therapies to treat aging, and here it is. We recently closed a seed round with a number of investors in our close-knit community, and are presently setting up our modest headquarters near Syracuse, NY, alongside our allies at Ichor Therapeutics. The staff at Ichor, fresh from a sizable investment made by Juvenescence in their subsidiary Antoxerene, have launched an incubator, Grapeseed.bio, to encourage the development of new companies focused on the treatment of ag...

How much omega-6 fatty acids do you really need?
Here’s a brief excerpt from my new book, Undoctored: Why Health Care Has Failed You and How You Can Become Smarter Than Your Doctor, available as pre-order and scheduled for release May 9, 2017:   From Undoctored: You don’t want omega-6 overload, but you also don’t want omega-6 deficiency. The ideal omega-6:omega-3 index is 2:1 or less. How do you achieve the right balance? It is much more simple than you might think. To ensure that you are consuming the correct amount of omega-6 vs. omega-3, choose fats such as lard and tallow (provided they are not hydrogenated, if store-bought), coconut oil, palm o...

Is aloe vera lotion really good for skin? Episode 156
Is aloe lotion good for skin? Gemma asks…I am a huge fan of Vaseline Intensive Care Aloe Fresh lotion. However, I have found another aloe lotion that is even cheaper: Perfect Purity. So I’m wondering can you tell me if the Perfect Purity will perform as well as my beloved Vaseline? Or should I just bite the bullet and save my dollars for a big bottle of the Vaseline Aloe Fresh? Thanks to Gemma for taking the time to record her question. We can answer this pretty conclusively just based on reviewing the ingredients and we’ll cover that first. But then we we want to take this opportunity to talk more about aloe ver...

Are you using the right oils?
Let me begin by stating this simple fact: We all need fats and oils in our diet. – Tweet this! We should not be trying to cut back or eliminate the fats or oils. Contrary to the blundering health advice of the last half-century, fats and oils do not make you fat; they help you lose weight. Fats and oils do not trigger insulin, the hormone of weight gain, nor do they increase the risk for cardiovascular disease. They generate satiety, leaving you feeling full and satisfied. It is important that you choose your oils wisely. Oils that were previously thought to be unhealthy, such as coconut oil and palm oil, due to their s...

Are super foods good for your skin? Episode 137
Are super foods effective beauty ingredients? Jana asks…What are your thoughts on super foods in skin care? Ingredients like acacia, coconut, grapeseed oil, berries, green tea, avocado, turmeric and resveratrol. What the heck IS a super food? There is no scientific or medical definition. Typically you’ll see them described like this: “superfoods are nutrient powerhouses that pack large doses of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals.” Jana’s question comes at a good time because I was just asked this same thing by a reporter from R29. She asked about things like Kale, Spirulina, and Chia seeds. Fi...

Beware beauty products in jars – Episode 106
Support the Beauty Brains by signing up for a free trail at Audible.com. Is Rodan and Fields really different? Dawn asks…
I’m interested in getting your opinion on whether or not Rodan and Fields is different from any other skin care line. My gut says they are the same.  I participated in a virtual information session (my friend wants me to join her team) and all the other consultants raved about the products as if nothing else had ever worked for them before.  I feel the price point is high. And to be frank, my degree is in chemistry and I recently closed my own skin care business.  So, when I received some...
