Long-running ProMED email service for alerting world to disease outbreaks is in trouble
The first news about the COVID-19 pandemic came not from a government or a scientific publication, but in an email from a disease-alert system called ProMED . This fateful missive in December 2019 about a few cases of a mysterious pneumonia in Wuhan, China, is just one example of how physicians and public health experts around the world have used the 30-year-old, free service to share real-time information about local disease outbreaks with tens of thousands of subscribers. Using Crowdfunding Campaigns to Examine Financial Toxicity and Logistical Burdens Facing Families of Children With Wilms Tumor

Vaccine related crowdfunding on a ‘Freedom Fundraising’ platform
DiscussionVery few of these fundraisers met their goals. With the exception of Access campaigns, they frequently contained highly polarizing language advocating against public health mandates, misinformation about vaccine safety, and language from bioethics and reproductive choice advocates. Restrictions on vaccine-related campaigns on the GoFundMe platform likely drove campaign creation on GiveSendGo. (Source: PLoS One)

Did a ‘nasty’ publishing scheme help an Indian dental school win high rankings?
Each year, the 500 undergraduates at Saveetha Dental College in Chennai, India, participate in 4-hour exams that require them to write a 1500-word manuscript on research they have conducted. After faculty and students review and revise the papers, they use an online tool to add references to previously published work. Many of the papers are then submitted to and published by journals; the process contributed to the more than 1400 scholarly works the dental school published last year. Saveetha, which calls itself a “pioneer in undergraduate publications,” says the exercise i...
