The Economic Wisdom of Nigel Lawson
Ryan BourneFormer UK Conservative MPNigel Lawson passed away this week. As Margaret Thatcher ’s longest‐serving Chancellor of the Exchequer (1983–1989), Lawson’s legacy on economics is a complex one. While his policies in the late 1980s led to a boom and bust cycle, exacerbated by the mistaken decision to enter the European exchange rate mechanism, his overall impact was positively transformative, steering the country towards a smaller government, free ‐market economic policy.Lawson ’s ingenuity came to the fore in opposition, when he brokered an amendment with Labour rebels to the 1977 Fin...

Artifiicial Stupidity
A few weeks ago I posted a sample of ChatGPT output, specifically a (very lame) fairy tale. What I didn ' t discuss here, as far as I remember, was that I later asked it some fairly technical questions in my academic specialty and it answered them accurately enough that a student would definitely get full credit on an exam. The New England Journal of Medicine today has launched what will be a series of articles on so-called Artificial Intelligence in medicine, beginning with ChatGPT and its competitors. Unfortunately it ' s paywalled, but I will just tell you that ChatGPT can pass the U.S. Medical Licensing Examinatio...

The New Deal and Recovery, Part 26: The RFC, Conclusion
Conclusion___________________________[1] That the CCC did not contribute to recovery isn ' t very surprising, given that its particular aim, like that of its Hoover-era predecessor, the Federal Farm Board, and of New Deal farm policies generally, was not so much promoting growth in national income as assuring U.S. farmers their " fair share " of it. Hence Henry Wallace ' s statement, in his last (1940)annual report as Secretary of the Treasury, that " Even full domestic employment. . .would not remove the need " for those programs, and the programs ' persistence long after the depression ended. Yet the " fair share " goal ...
